Karen Sue Showell, that was a great source shows that there was an Addie Pearl Alston that lived in North Carolina and had a Robert Alston and Mattie Mae Edwards as her parents.

We still need to show that she was the same Addie that married Dudley McDonald Gooding and had a son named Cuba.

This is Robert Morris Alston that was attached to the Addie before I detatched him. It is the line that Karen was trying to attach to Cuba Gooding.

And it’s definitely an Addie Alston marrying Dudley in 1944 in NYC. I don’t see how she can be in two places at once? But it’s possible she was in NYC a couple of years. Can we check more obituaries?

Carmen was Dudley’s 1st wife. And Addie Alston, Cuba Sr’s mother, raised him - and was from NC.

I was trying to find a possible divorce record for Addie. Or a census showing Cuba living with her and her new husband Jesse Williams.

While in Barbados, Gooding Sr. started researching his family's past for an autobiography titled "Everybody Plays the Fool," for which NBC has picked up the rights. Negotiations are under way to produce a four-part miniseries based on the book.

Despite the adversity endured by his father, Gooding Sr. said, "My family has survived splendidly -- this is not 'Roots.' "

Looks to me like Cuba Sr was raised in Harlem and if he knew NC, it was from grandparent visits only.

At 70, Cuba Gooding Sr. has no problem divulging details about the past and the development of his formidable musical career from his Harlem, N.Y. origins. He notes that his father,Dudley MacDonald Gooding, was a Barbados native with an affinity for the Marcus Garvey “Black Nationalist” movement in the early 1900s. “He told my mother that he would name his first born son Cuba – that’s because he once lived in Cuba and had positive feelings about the country,” said Gooding Sr.

He also revealed that his mother (Addie Alston) wanted him to become a solo singer in the mold of Nat King Cole or Brook Benton. “She always wanted me to separate myself from that whole group thing.” In fact, The Main Ingredient had already formed in Gooding’s midst, as some of his boyhood friends started rehearsing in his neighborhood, but Gooding was unaware of their existence.

I’ll bet Addie (Alston) Gooding was a cousin of Addie Pearl (Alston) Williams. And the Gooding widow remarried. I can’t find the “auto biography” optioned by NBC on line. Census slog ...

The Alstons used the same names over and over. So being a close relative was one possibility I had thought of, but found nothing.
