Please don't merge duplicate profiles of Private - it's a HUGE Gedcom import duplicate of virtually our whole SA tree. Every time the import sees a duplicate it stops, but everytime someone merges that duplicate it carries on. Hundreds of profiles and hours and hours of meaningless work fixing conflicts already caused. PLEASE, I'm begging you, alert me to come and remove them instead :-)

It is a real disappointment that Geni re-introduced Gedcom import functionality.
Curators and others have spent many many hours trying to merge and sort out the early Geni duplicate profiles caused by Gedcom imports in the early years.
Just when (certainly the SA Tree) seemed to be straightened we have enthusiastic Geni users dumping duplicates into the Geni World Family Tree via unregulated Gedcom Imports.

Thanks for the Warning Sharon - whether it will be heeded is another thought as there will always be the urge for users to "clean up my piece of the Geni Tree" in the interests of a clean slate for viewing by immediate family members.

All that early effort wasted.
That is my rant for June 2021

Thanks John. I feel the same :-/

6/4/2021 at 12:11 AM

I'm isolating them as fast as I find them.

Private User thanks for all the clean-up work you've been doing - but where its Andries Lodewikus Stephanus Gildenhuys duplicates - rather just call me to remove them

Been trying to add sources and correct names and information accordingly of my ancestors and relatives.
Then this popped up !

Good intentions a road straight to ---
Not a yellow brick road

Yup. I see that we're now onto the imports from 30/5. Nightmare city.

6/4/2021 at 1:14 AM

Can this merging not be attacked in another way........for instance on Brothers Keeper..if i type in a name and the programme thinks its the same person it makes me alert to it or asks if it is the same person..in this way duplicates are avoided
I have spent hours this week correcting stupid merges and I am totally sick of wasting my time as I am sure you all are too.

Surely GENI can change the settings so that only the person who added a name can make changes and merge their own person..........if any person wants to add to another profile they can send a message to the effect- which quite a number of people have done.

There are too many managers per profile but I see I get smart matches of people who I dont even know where they fit in on my tree so I ignore them , but not everyone does.......

6/4/2021 at 1:27 AM

Geni is supposed to alert you to Duplicates as fast as it can.

This is a gedcom import though.

I have also experienced huge frustrations with duplicate profiles and merging issues. Unfortunately some requests to accept a merge, or collaborate, are not ever acknowledged by the original geni capturer, who may have become totally inactive, or deceased. It can be a nightmare😢

Hi Sharon, just a suggestion, perhaps post your message in the Overview of the profile also in bold.
All the best, kind regards
Ilma

Annatjie -- problem with original manager controllimg profile , too many of those gone !
Or they never ever reply to any message they just IGNORE any message .
Even when one has a valid source to add that will inprove information of a profile.
Have had at least 20 of those just this week alone.
One profile 84 managers and not one have replied to 3 messages I have send ; so I went ahead and corrected wrong information . Suddenly the sleeping giants woke up.

Can understand his reasoning for just importing all.
Some managers and some curators guard profiles like hens teeth.
Allowing NO valid corrections and never responding to anyone who dare to challenge ancient profiles that need improvement desperately.
Was told I interfere ----- then what happens ? You create a " duplicate " profile or whole family , with new correct improved information according to a valid source .

SAG and First Fifty Years - just compilations of transcribed information from sources but also from assumptions --- is not infallible, neither is any family genealogy book written by just another human from valid sources or a very imaginative mind. Today found a man born 1711 married 1711 to a wife born 1719 in one of those ------
MOOC documents also often wrong maybe from incorrect transcripts accidentally or intentionally sometimes.
Even actual documents can have incorrect information on them .

I myself created a lot of duplicate profiles in the Eastern Cape 1820 's and German settlers because the managers and curators involved were completely uncooperative .
They just ignored me !!
I even added and corrected information on many existing profiles of that period / area ; that they were oblivious of thinking they are always right .

Too many of the profiles highlighted by the Gedcom import of Andries Gildenhuys need valid sources and corrections I have noticed.
Too many have NO valid sources , the feeble excuse being but they are from long ago! Before thee great flood .
Then time to update and correct mistakes on all of those , the managers seem to have left the building.
So we should actually thank him !

Hi Sharon

If one looks closely at his profile Andries Lodewikus Stephanus Gildenhuys there are fundamental errors, as his father was born in 1842 and his mother in 1851. Surely this cant be a profile of a person that is still alive.
A further problem is that his import is not an exact match of the existing profile and a lot of his duplicate profiles show people alive (which are incorrect). I therefore do not know if the system will necessary pick that up as a duplicate.
I agree that some managers do not answer when a request is send to them, however to create a whole new duplicate South Africa tree, is maybe taking it to far.
Furthermore I have tried to contact him, but he do not reply, so his is then also guilty of not responding

Hi there, can we flag the profile with a note or can we add the "do not merge" to his name for example? Anything that will alert the next person touching the profile to stop what they are doing might help. With all of the DNA testing going on these days there are so very many new users who are discovering all the sites. What are your thoughts?

6/4/2021 at 5:24 AM

Private I understand that - but this isn't the case here - it's hundreds of profiles.

6/4/2021 at 5:25 AM

Ilma Lucht the problem with that is that nobody opens the profile of the manager before they merge.

6/4/2021 at 5:34 AM

Phillipp, I've reported the profile as 'fake' as the parents' ages make it impossible that he's a living person - in the hope that CS can investigate for us.

Agree 100 % Sharon.
Just looked at all the duplicates and closed GENI!!

6/4/2021 at 6:46 AM

Ouch Sharon. No wonder I have always hated GEDCOMs.

On noooooooo - thnx for this imporyant warning Sharon. I was not at all aware of this gedcom issue, of this ALS Gildenhuys. Bad news! I am honestly getting very tired of all these duplicates and merges. I am almost at the point of giving up and leaving this collaborative platform and just go back on my own, where I would have more time to rather build and search for docs, than to try to fix! It just takes too much time to fix duplucates and to try and pick up on wrong merges. Kindly see the discussion I have created quiteva while ago, on this matter. I 've even asked the bigwigs to plz help us, in techinically creating a better "stoping meganism, or a sort of button / flag, or better warning system" - ( anything that will work!!!) - to actually stop duplicates, the minute a duplicate is being created and before it is put into Geni. (Apparently there is something in the pipeline in the program for this, but It is actually not available yet?) Maybe curators can all ask for this collectively ( will that carry weight?) and then Geni might get moving on this? I have also came apon duplicates that have been on Geni for years and years. I don't understand why the program only now throws them out, for us to merge? That also cannot be ok - or what am I missing here?

Sorry typos!

Hi Wilma,

As Johannes pointed out, we need to try better to identify duplicates without also introducing a bunch of bad matches. We're working on that.

The "fix" the curator mentioned, is that we have an experimental feature that will block users from adding onto profiles when there is a tree match nearby. As they mentioned, we tested this with the curators and found that while it had some good effect, it also got in the way of fixing the tree when there's a match waiting for someone to approve a merge. We'll revisit this to see if we can come up with a solution.

Kind regards,

Mike

Private User - thankyou or finding me all those duplicates to isolate before they turn into a many-headed hydra.
