Catherine was orphaned by the age of five, and was raised as a ward of the founder and superior of the Ursuline Convent in Quebec, Mother Marie de l'Incarnation (Marie Guyart).
Uncommonly well-educated, she could read and write (French) and spoke several Native languages, both Iroquoian and Algonquian, in addition to French. Left with three young children when Jean Durand died, Catherine married Jacques Couturier (1647~88) from Calvados. They had seven children. She would marry a third time, on August 28, 1697, widower Jean de Lafond, a long-time neighbour and friend. Catherine died at Batiscan in 1709 in her 60th year. She was survived by only four of her ten children---Louis Durand, Geneviève Couturier Metivier, Denis Couturier and Jean François Couturier---and 14 grandchildren.
