Edward Clinton, 1st Earl of Lincoln

Edward Fiennes de Clinton, 1st Earl of Lincoln, KG (1512 – 16 January 1584/85) was an English nobleman and Lord High Admiral.[1]

Edward Clinton was born at Scrivelsby in Lincolnshire, the son of Thomas Clinton, 8th Baron Clinton (1490–1517), by Jane (or Joan) Poynings, one of the seven illegitimate children of Sir Edward Poynings (1459–1521) of Westenhanger, Kent. She was the sister of Thomas Poynings, 1st Baron Poynings (d.1545), Edward Poynings (d.1546), and Sir Adrian Poynings. After the death of the 8th Baron Clinton in 1517, Jane Poynings married, as his second wife, Sir Robert Wingfield (d.1539).[2][3][4][5]

Clinton succeeded his father in 1517 as 9th Baron Clinton. He joined the retinue of King Henry VIII at Boulogne and Calais in 1532. He attended the Parliament of 1536 and later served in the Royal Navy against French and Scottish naval forces from 1544 to 1547. He was knighted in Edinburgh by Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford for his role in the capture of that city in 1544. He also took part in the Siege of Boulogne in September 1544. Under John Dudley, Viscount Lisle he saw action against the French at the Battle of Spearhead in 1545 and was sent as one of the peace commissioners to France the following year. He commanded the English fleet during the invasion of Scotland by Edward Seymour and provided naval artillery support at the Battle of Pinkie on 15 September 1547.

Appointed Governor of Boulogne in 1547, he successfully defended the city against a French siege from 1549 to 1550. That same year, with Henry Manners, 2nd Earl of Rutland, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire and of Nottinghamshire and served as Lord High Admiral under King Edward VI from 1550 to 1553, and again from 1559 to 1585. He was a Privy Counsellor from 1550 to 1553, and briefly served as an envoy to France in 1551. After appointment as Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire in 1552, Clinton later took part in the defeat of Wyatt's Rebellion in Kent in 1554. Following his appointment as Lord General of the expedition of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke, he fought with Spanish forces at the Battle of Saint-Quentin on 10 August 1557.

Upon his return to England, Clinton took command of the English fleet and raided the French coast and in 1558 burnt the town of Conquet and the surrounding area. He was a joint commander with Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl of Warwick of a large army during the Northern Rebellion, however the army was still being assembled when the rebellion was defeated in January 1570. He was created Earl of Lincoln in 1572, and served as ambassador to France, during which time he undertook several commissions from Queen Elizabeth I until his death in London on 16 January 1585.

In 1541-42 following the dissolution of the monasteries, Clinton and his wife, Ursula, were granted the lands of the earlier Aslackby Preceptory of the Knights Templar—later belonging to the Knights Hospitaller—at Aslackby in Lincolnshire.[6]

He married thrice:

Firstly to Elizabeth Blount, Henry VIII's former mistress, by whom he produced three daughters:

• Lady Bridget Clinton (born c. 1536), married Robert Dymoke (alias Dymock or Dymocke), of Scrivelsby, Lincolnshire, c.1556 and had ten children. He was a devout Catholic and was declared a martyr after his death.
• Lady Katherine Clinton (b. c. 1538 - d. 14 August 1621), married William Burgh, 2nd Baron Burgh of Gainsborough (c. 1522 - 10 October 1584), son of Thomas Burgh, 1st Baron Burgh.[7][8] They had issue which included Thomas Burgh, 3rd Baron Burgh.[7][8]
• Lady Margaret Clinton (b. c. 1539), married Charles Willoughby, 2nd Baron Willoughby of Parham (died 1603), and had five children.

Secondly to Ursula Stourton, daughter of William Stourton, 7th Baron Stourton by whom he produced six children

Thirdly on 1 October 1552 to Elizabeth FitzGerald (" the fair Geraldine"), daughter of Gerald FitzGerald, 9th Earl of Kildare. The marriage was childless.

He died in London on 16 January 1585.

• Lord Clinton joined the retinue of King Henry VIII at Boulogne and Calais in 1532. In 1534 he married, Elizabeth Blount, mother of the King bastard, Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond. She was much older than him, but his lands adjoined hers. They were to have three daughters, Bridget (was to marry Robert Dymoke of Scrivelsby and later lived at South Kyme); Catherine (was to marry Lord Borough of Gainsborough) and Margaret (was to marry Charles Lord Willoughby of Parham).
• In 1536, he served in the Long Parliament. This year Henry VIII closed down most of the smaller monasteries in England. Barlings survived the first wave of suppression as it was a fairly prosperous abbey, but the reprieve was short lived. In Oct 1536 a rebellion against the Dissolution, known locally as the Lincolnshire Rising, took place. The same Monday, 2nd Oct, Edward, Lord Clinton left home on horseback, with just one servant. He headed first for Sleaford, and Lord Hussey. Clinton galloped on to Nottingham, then on to Lord Huntington at Ashby. By Friday, he reached the Earl of Shrewsbury at Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire. He carried letters from Cromwell. Meanwhile the rebels were joined by other groups of armed men, alerted by beacons, and had spread across the Humber to Yorkshire. The Member of Parliament for Lincoln, Thomas Moigne met Robert Aske, who led the rebellion in Yorkshire (where it was called the Pilgrimage of Grace). The Abbot of Barlings, Matthew Mackarel, and six canons were implicated, although they were probably all unwilling participants. They were arrested, and the Abbot and four canons were convicted of treason and hanged at Lincoln on 26 Mar 1537. As a result of their involvement, none of the other canons received a pension. The execution of the rebels was quickly followed by the Dissolution of the Abbey in 1537. All the valuables were taken away by the King's men, the lead was stripped from the church roofs and 'more than a horse load of the Abbot's books' were carted away.
• The land-holdings were leased to Sir Edward Clinton and, in 1539, the abbey site was given to the King's brother-in-law, Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. By 1620, Sir Christopher Wray had acquired the site and built a mansion next to the ruined abbey. It seems his house did not last long for we know that it was in ruins by 1720. The derelict buildings can be seen on Millecent's drawing made around 1730 and their outline can still be traced on the ground as a complex of earthworks to the south west of the abbey buildings.
• When the Duke of Richmond died in 1536, Lord Clinton took his dead stepson's title of Admiral of England, his first marriage had been a good career move. Elizabeth Lady Clinton, returned to court as lady-in-waiting to Anne of Cleves, but not for long. She died, and Lord Clinton wasted no time in replacing her with a new wife, Ursula Stourton, who took her place at the court. She was the niece of John Dudley, and gave him three sons and three daughters.

A joint commander with Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl of Warwick of a large army, he quelled the rising of the Earls of Northumberland and Westmoreland in 1570 and Elizabeth created him Earl of Lincoln in 1572, employing him on diplomatic missions to France. He was also an investor in voyages of privateering and colonization. He had a stake in Drake's round-the-world voyage of 1577-80 and probably in Humphrey Gilbert's expedition to America, 1578. When the latter failed he was one of those charged with enquiry into the causes.

• Henry Clinton or Fiennes, 2nd Earl of Lincoln, KB (1539 – 29 September 1616) was an English peer, styled 10th Baron Clinton from 1572 to 1585.[1]
• He was the son of Edward Clinton, 1st Earl of Lincoln, by second wife Ursula Stourton. He was made a Knight of the Bath in 1553. He was returned to the House of Commons, representing the constituency of Lincolnshire in 1571. He was commissioned a captain of horse in the Royal army in 1569.
• He was also Vice-Admiral of Lincolnshire and Vice-Admiral of Yorkshire.
• He inherited the earldom and barony from his father Edward in 1585. By his father's will, which Henry contested, he inherited Tattershall Castle; but his wife Elizabeth had a life interest in the family property at Sempringham.[2] Subsequently Clinton feuded with the poet Tailboys Dymoke, son of his brother-in-law Robert Dymoke, over some obnoxious verses.[3]

• Lord Stourton married Elizabeth, daughter of Edmund Dudley, Esquire, one of the Privy Council to King Henry VII.(*) Elizabeth Dudley(t) was half-sister of John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland.(+) The contention that Lord Stourton married a second wife in the person of Agnes Ryse, the daughter of the Countess of Bridgewater, seems untenable, and is disputed by the actual facts. Nevertheless, the marriage is said to have taken place January 6th, 1545-46. Lord Stourton, in leaving her a legacy under his Will (as will be seen later), describes her, however, as "Mrs. .... etc.

Lord High Admiral of England, who died 16th January, 1585, and was buried under a stately monument in St. George's Chapel, Windsor. On the 17th July, 1550, he had a licence to go into Lincolnshire "and because he desired the companie of the Lord Stourton therefore licence was given him also for his absence for xl days. Edward Fiennes de Clinton, 1st Earl of Lincoln, KG (1512 – 16 January 1584/85) was an English nobleman and Lord High Admiral.[1]

Family

Edward Clinton was born at Scrivelsby in Lincolnshire, the son of Thomas Clinton, 8th Baron Clinton (1490–1517), by Jane (or Joan) Poynings, one of the seven illegitimate children of Sir Edward Poynings (1459–1521) of Westenhanger, Kent. She was the sister of Thomas Poynings, 1st Baron Poynings (d.1545), Edward Poynings (d.1546), and Sir Adrian Poynings. After the death of the 8th Baron Clinton in 1517, Jane Poynings married, as his second wife, Sir Robert Wingfield (d.1539).[2][3][4][5]

Career

Clinton succeeded his father in 1517 as 9th Baron Clinton. He joined the retinue of King Henry VIII at Boulogne and Calais in 1532. He attended the Parliament of 1536 and later served in the Royal Navy against French and Scottish naval forces from 1544 to 1547. He was knighted in Edinburgh by Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford for his role in the capture of that city in 1544. He also took part in the Siege of Boulogne in September 1544. Under John Dudley, Viscount Lisle he saw action against the French at the Battle of Spearhead in 1545 and was sent as one of the peace commissioners to France the following year. He commanded the English fleet during the invasion of Scotland by Edward Seymour and provided naval artillery support at the Battle of Pinkie on 15 September 1547.

Appointed Governor of Boulogne in 1547, he successfully defended the city against a French siege from 1549 to 1550. That same year, with Henry Manners, 2nd Earl of Rutland, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire and of Nottinghamshire and served as Lord High Admiral under King Edward VI from 1550 to 1553, and again from 1559 to 1585. He was a Privy Counsellor from 1550 to 1553, and briefly served as an envoy to France in 1551. After appointment as Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire in 1552, Clinton later took part in the defeat of Wyatt's Rebellion in Kent in 1554. Following his appointment as Lord General of the expedition of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke, he fought with Spanish forces at the Battle of Saint-Quentin on 10 August 1557.

Upon his return to England, Clinton took command of the English fleet and raided the French coast and in 1558 burnt the town of Conquet and the surrounding area. He was a joint commander with Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl of Warwick of a large army during the Northern Rebellion, however the army was still being assembled when the rebellion was defeated in January 1570. He was created Earl of Lincoln in 1572, and served as ambassador to France, during which time he undertook several commissions from Queen Elizabeth I until his death in London on 16 January 1585.

In 1541-42 following the dissolution of the monasteries, Clinton and his wife, Ursula, were granted the lands of the earlier Aslackby Preceptory of the Knights Templar—later belonging to the Knights Hospitaller—at Aslackby in Lincolnshire.[6]

Marriage and progeny

Elizabeth FitzGerald, (" the fair Geraldine") daughter of Gerald FitzGerald, 9th Earl of Kildare, third wife of Lord Clinton He married thrice:

Firstly to Elizabeth Blount, Henry VIII's former mistress, by whom he produced three daughters: Lady Bridget Clinton (born c. 1536), married Robert Dymoke (alias Dymock or Dymocke), of Scrivelsby, Lincolnshire, c.1556 and had ten children. He was a devout Catholic and was declared a martyr after his death. Lady Katherine Clinton (b. c. 1538 - d. 14 August 1621), married William Burgh, 2nd Baron Burgh of Gainsborough (c. 1522 - 10 October 1584), son of Thomas Burgh, 1st Baron Burgh.[7][8] They had issue which included Thomas Burgh, 3rd Baron Burgh.[7][8] Lady Margaret Clinton (b. c. 1539), married Charles Willoughby, 2nd Baron Willoughby of Parham (died 1603), and had five children. Secondly to Ursula Stourton, daughter of William Stourton, 7th Baron Stourton by whom he produced six children Henry Clinton, 2nd Earl of Lincoln, eldest son and heir. Edward Clinton Thomas Clinton (born 1548), married Mary Tyrell. Lady Frances Clinton (1552-12 September 1623). She was born at Scrivelsby, Lincolnshire and died at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire. She married Giles Brydges, 3rd Baron Chandos. Elizabeth Clinton (1554-1634) Anne Clinton (1553-1629) Thirdly on 1 October 1552 to Elizabeth FitzGerald (" the fair Geraldine"), daughter of Gerald FitzGerald, 9th Earl of Kildare. The marriage was childless.

Death

He died in London on 16 January 1585.
