John III le Strange

John III Lestrange was the son of John II Lestrange and Amice.[2]
He married Lucy Tregoz, daughter of Robert Tregoz.[1]
He died before 26 March 1269.[1]
He supported King Henry III against Simon De Montfort.[1]
In 1213 he was old enough to attend on King John.[1]
In 1214 he undertook military service against the French.[1]
On 25 May 1231 he was granted by King Henry III the manor of Wrockwardine, Shropshire.[1]
In 1232 he played a part in negotiations between King Henry III and Prince Llywelyn the Great.[1]
He held the office of Constable of Bridgnorth, Chester and Shrewsbury Castles between 1233 and 1240.[1]

Some accounts say that he was born in Ness and Cheswardine, Shropshire. Alternately, it appears that his family was already in possession of Knockin Castle by the time he was born.

Knockin is a village and civil parish located on the B4396 in Shropshire, England. It comprises mainly historic detached buildings in a rural setting. Much of Knockin was owned by the Earl of Bradford until it was sold off in lots to meet other financial demands. The Earl still owns the cricket pitch and other small pockets of land in the area. The local public house is called the Bradford Arms and displays the Bradford family coat of arms. The pub also has an impressive clock with three faces, hung outside above the main entrance. The motto displayed on the sign is that of the Bridgeman Earls of Bradford "Nec temere nec timide" (Neither rashly nor timidly) indicating a policy of progress with prudence.

Church of St Mary

The parish church of St Mary at Knockin was founded by Ralph Le Strange between 1182 and 1195. It has a Norman chancel, nave and north aisle but the building was heavily restored in 1847. Its graveyard was consecrated in 1817 and before then all burials took place at Kinnerley. The bricked-up doorway which can be seen in the chancel is because the building was once a chapel to an adjacent castle and the entrance recalls the time when the priest entered from the fortress side.

All that remains of Knockin Castle today is a large tree-covered mound of earth. It was a moated site between two knolls and may have been built by Henry II in the 12th century. A little while after his death it passed into the hands of John le Strange, whose family were also responsible for building the church which stands close to the castle site. Like most Shropshire castles which are now only marked by grassy sites, its stones live on in a number of buildings in the area.

John le Strange, who was a person of great note in his time. In 16th of King John, his father being then living, he was in the Wars of Poitou in France. In 15th of Henry III, 1231, he obtained a grant of the inheritance of Wrockwardine for the yearly rent of œ8, to be paid to the King and his heirs and successors. In 21st of Henry III, 1237, he was appointed Sheriff of Salop and Stafford and constituted Governor of the Castles of Salop and Brugges. He was afterwards one of the Baron's Marchers and had command to reside in the Marshes in order to resist incursions by the Welsh. In the contest between Henry III and the Barons he adhered with great fidelity to the King and obtained for his loyalty a grant of the lands of Walter de Muscegros, which had been forfeited in that rebellion.

   LESTRANGE family, Great Ness , Cheswardine , and Knockin , Shropshire . JOHN LESTRANGE (d. c. 1269) witnessed the treaty between Dafydd ap Gruffydd (q.v.) and Henry III in May 1240, was appointed in March 1241 to try Dafydd, and in Jan. 1245 was a commissioner to make peace with him. HAWISE, daughter of this John Lestrange, m. Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn (q.v.). In the years 1244-5 John Lestrange wrote to Henry III telling of Gruffydd's support for the English cause; he aided the prince of Powys against Llywelyn in 1257, and ROGER LESTRANGE (d. 1311), son of John, guarded the castle of Dolforwyn for Gruffydd, in whose support he wrote to Edward I claiming lands between the Rhiw and the Luggy. Hawise (above), Gruffydd's wife, was a leader in the plot for the rebellion of Dafydd against Llywelyn in 1274. Roger Lestrange was a justice at Rhuddlan in 1278, controlled the lands of English Maelor and Mechain in this year, and commanded some of the English forces against the Welsh at the end of the 13th cent.; it was his troops who met Llywelyn at Builth in Dec. 1282. Numerous other members of this family from Shropshire were active in the wars with the Welsh.

JOHN LESTRANGE III, son and heir. In 1213 he attended upon the King to pay a debt on behalf of his father, and in 1214 he was serving in Poitou. In 1219 he was conducting an enquiry into forest matters at Shrewsbury. In 1225 he was directed to assist in conducting to Gloucester the fifteenth collected in Staffs and Salop. On 25 May 1231 the King granted to him and his heirs the manor of Wrockwardine. In 1232, and frequently thereafter, he was appointed to see that the truce with Llewelin was observed on both sides. In 1235 he was Constable of Montgomery. On 24 October 1236 he was appointed Sheriff of Salop and Staffs. Late in 1240 or early in 1241 he was appointed Justice of Chester. In 1248 he was about to go on pilgrimage to Pontigny. In 1249 he had a grant to himself and his heirs of a market and fair at Knockin. In March 1257/8 and again in August 1260 he was summoned to Chester, in October 1261 to London, and in January 1262/3 to Hereford and in May to Worcester, in connection with the disturbances in Cymru. John le Strange (d 1269), lord marcher, third in descent from Roland le Strange (who occurs as a witness in 1112), held extensive estates in Shropshire and Norfolk, including Knokyn in the former, and Hunstanton in the latter county. He served in 1214 under King John in Poitou, and between 1233 and 1240 was successively appointed by Henry III constable of the castle of Montgomery, Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, and Chester. He spent a long life in defending the Welsh border as a lord marcher, and during the rebellion of Simon de Montfort stood fast to the crown. On of his daughters, Hawise, married Griffin, prince of Powys; his younger son Hamon, accompanied Prince Edward on the crusade of 1270, and in 1272 married at Cyprus Isabell d'Ibelin, widow of Hugh II king of Cyprus. Another son, Robert, was ancestor of the Lords Strange of Blackmere. John le Strange died in 1269, and was succeeded by his son John (d 1275), who by his marriage with Joan de Someri, co-heiress of Hugh de Albini, earl of Arundel, added much to the influence and wealth of his family. His grandson, John, sixth baron of Knokyn (d 1311), gave in 1310 his manor of Hunstanton to his younger brother, Hamon, from which the Norfolk le Stranges come in direct descent.
