About Rfn. Thomas Monaghan
Thomas Monaghan was born at Wyndham in the Southland region of New Zealand's South Island on 14 March 1880 (ref. Military Personnel File). His parents were Michael Monaghan and Margaret Monaghan (nee O'Brien) who had married at Invercargill on 15 August 1874 (reg. 1874/8992). It seems that the births of Thomas and his siblings were all unregistered. Margaret died at Riverton on 28 May 1911, will Michael dying three months later on 27 August 1911. Both are buried in Riverton Cemetery. Thomas was a farmer. During World War I he served with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 1st Battalion (Service No. WWI 15940). He was killed in action at Belgium. 37-year-old Thomas was buried in the Strand Military Cemetery [V. D. 4]. His brother Richard Monaghan also served (WWI 26/596). Bio by Debbie McCauley (23 November 2024).
