- 5. John Stanley, of Weever and Over Alderley, co. Chester jure uxoris, living 29 March 1470 but d. before 1485, third son of Thomas Stanley, Knt., Lord Stanley, by Joan, daughter of Robert Goushill, Knt., of Hoveringham.[10] He m. (as her first husband) after 1445, Elizabeth de Weever, heiress of Weever, in the parish of Middlewich, co. Chester, d. 17 Feb. 1512/3.[11] She m. (2) John Done, Knt., of Utkinton.[12]
- Jure uxoris is a Latin term that means "by right of his wife" or "in right of a wife".[1] It is commonly used to refer to a title held by a man whose wife holds it in her own right. Similarly, the husband of an heiress could become the possessor of her lands jure uxoris, "by right of [his] wife". Jure uxoris monarchs are not to be confused with kings consort, who were merely consorts of their wives, not co-rulers.
From Ormerod's The history of the county palatine and city of Chester: page 113:
Thomas de Weever married Elizabeth, daughter of .... By her he had issue Elizabeth, daughter and heiress, wife of sir John Stanley, a younger son of Thomas, the first lord Stanley, to whom king Henry VI. a° 24, gave the disposal of her in marriage as his ward; she remarried sir John Done of Utkinton.

STANLEY
Thomas Stanley, son of Sir John Stanley and Joan Goushill, born circa 1435, inherited his father's titles, including that of King of Mann and Baron Stanley. Stanley owned what is now Tatton Park in Cheshire. He married, firstly Eleanor, sister of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick and secondly to Lady Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VII, as his second wife.
He was created Earl of Derby after playing a decisive part in the Battle of Bosworth field, which placed his step-son and the Tudor dynasty on the throne of England and is reputed to have retrieved the crown of England from the battlefield and placed it on the head of his own stepson. His brother William Stanley was later convicted of treason and executed by Henry VII for his support of the pretender Perkin Warbeck. Thomas and William's elder brother, Sir John Stanley, became the founder of the Alderley line of Stanley family. He married Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of Thomas de Weever of Weever and Alderley.
The family resided at Weever for several generations, but Sir John's great-grandson Thomas Stanley, High Sheriff of Cheshire in 1572, made Alderley the main family seat. He re-built the old halls both of Weever and Alderley. The hall was situated in the village of Nether Alderley close to the mill. It was surrounded by a moat, which was crossed by a stone bridge. He was the first member of the family to be buried at Alderley. An alabaster monument in Nether Alderley Church, depicts him in armour, with his four children at his feet.

• Sometimes called knight, but this confuses him with a later John Stanley.
• Elder brother, according to the Stanley website. Other sites say he was a third son. This John inherited the Weever estates of his wife Elizabeth. Possibly this John Stanley was in fact his own father's elder son; and because this John took the Weever estates, John's younger brother was the father's heir.
