History

Snorri Þorgrímsson or Snorri Goði (Icelandic pronunciation; 963-1031[1]) was a prominent chieftain in Western Iceland, who featured in a number of Icelandic sagas. The main source of his life is the Eyrbyggja saga, in which he is the main character, although he also figures prominently in Njál's saga and the Laxdæla saga. Snorri was the nephew of Gísli Súrsson, the hero of Gísla saga, while his son Halldórr was the subject of two tales detailing Halldórr's service in the retinue of the Norwegian king Haraldr Sigurðarson.

Eyrbyggja Saga says of him "He was a very shrewd man with unusual foresight, a long memory and a taste for vengeance. To his friends he gave good counsel, but his enemies learned to fear the advice he gave."[2]

Njál's saga says of him "Snorri was reckoned the wisest man in Iceland, not counting those who were prescient

Høvding som bodde på Helgafell og Sælingsdalstunge på Vestlandet, Island

• I ungdomsårene ble han kalla Snorre og dette fortrengte hans egentlige navn som var Torgrim Torgrimsson. Navnet kommer fra ordet snorra ("snurra") og navnet er tolket som et kallenavn med betydningen av vilt sinn.
• 978 Snorri gode var fjorten vintre da han for utenlands.
• 979 Han kom tilbake til Island og bodde på Helgafjell sammen med farbroren, Berki den digre, og moren, Thordis. Denne våren drepte Eyolf den grå, sønn av Thord den høyrøstede, Gisle Sursson,
• 980 Neste vår, da Snorri var seksten vintre gammel, bygde han seg bolig på Helgafell og bodde der tjuetre år, før Kristendommen ble lovfestet på Island,
• 1003 Deretter bodde han åtte vintre på Helgafjell. Og den siste vinteren drepte Thorgest Thorhallson Viga-Styr, mågen til Snorri gode, på Jørva i Flisuhverfi.
• 1011 Snorre flyttet sitt bo til Sælingsdalstunge og bodde der i 20 år. Han bygde en kirke på Helgafell og en annen på Tunge i Sælingsdal,
• Snorri gode hadde nitten ektefødte barn som vokste opp.
• Med Åsdis Viga-Styrsdatter. hadde han barna Thord katt var eldst, så Thorodd, tredje var Thorstein, fjerde Gudlaug munk.
• Med Thurid, datter av Illugi røde. hadde han barna den femte Sigrid, sjette Unn;
• Med Hallfrid Einarsdatter.den sjuende Klepp, åttende Halldora, niende Thordis, tiende Gudrun, ellevte Halldor, tolvte Måni, trettende Eyolf, fjortende Thora, femtende Hallbera, sekstende Thurid, syttende Thorleif, attende Åløf, nittende Snorri. Han var født etter sin fars død.
• Snorri gode hadde tre trellefødte barn; den ene het Thord katt, Jørund og Thorild.
• 1031 Han døde av sykdom et år etter kong Olav den Helliges fall på Stiklestad, og Snorre ble begravd på Sælingsdalstunge i den kirken han selv hadde fått oppført
• Snorri var velsignet med en stor ætt, for fra ham stammer ættene til de gildeste menn på Island, og Bjarkøyingene i Hålogaland, Gøtuskjeggene på Færøyene og mange andre stormenn som ikke er omtalt her, både i dette landet og andre.og rope kong Olav den Hellige .
