Do we have the wrong people or dates?

Also, her mother Mary Crandal was age 59 at Johanna's birth!

Could she really be Hannah Taylor Crandall (Gaylord)'s daughter, born 1646?

Patricia Ann Scoggin you did a beautiful detailing job on the overview for "elder" John Crandall -- and I don't see he had a daughter Joanna listed.

Ideas?

I'll take a look at records on the husband's side. In theory that leads to my possible family line.

Sandra - good catch, there are some issues in this tree that need attention.

I'd also like to see some biographical detail showing just how important "Elder" John Crandall was.

Erica, Joanna Lewis (Crandal) is under "and 7 others"

Erica & Sandra,
I don't even have a Johanna as a child of Rev Elder John Crandall.
He had 7 children with Mary (?Opp?): [John, James, Jane, Sarah, Rev Joseph, Samuel & Peter]; and 2 with Hannah (Gaylord): [Jeremiah & Ebe]r.

I have that Mary died in Aug 1670 and that John married Hannah the same year (she would have been 24). (He didn't wait long did he??? although with at least 3 children 10 or under, he may have needed help...) Elder John is my 8th ggf.

I have that Hannah was born in 1647 so she would have been old enough to have Johanna, but I have that she had Eber in 1676, and Elder John died in Nov 1676!

She isn't the dtr of John, Jr either as he had 5 children: John (1673); Elizabeth (1675); Mary (1681); Peter (1685); and Samuel (1686).

Soooooo, I don't know who she belongs to. Don't know if this helps any or not????

Patricia I'll make a deal with you. :)

Can you conform John Crandall's wives & children to the known facts & Sandra and I will look for where Lewis' wife belongs, if at all? It's bothering me that the tree doesn't reflect your overview.

Meanwhile I'll disconnect Joanna from parents.

Joanna Lewis
Is now parent less.

Once we have sources in her profile overview, it's easiest to create new (correct) parents and then merge them into the existing profiles.

If it turns out her parents are not known, we can make "placeholders" so the error does not recur.

Erica,
I'll work on his profile, but may need some help getting a child or two moved or disconnected...

Just post the link here. Teamwork gets it done faster & better !

Just so I can get to Elder John w ease, his profile is at: "Elder" John Crandall

Hope this will take you to the 2 children that need to be "removed": Nathan Crandall; Rebecca Crandall (if they don't turn "blue", I go to both and get their profile #'s.

Looks like they didn't "copy" as blue when I did a copy/paste, so here are their sites:
Nathan Crandall is at: Nathan Crandall

Rebecca is at: Rebecca Crandall

Hello all. Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island has no name for John I first wife and Hannah as his second. He states further on "His second wife may have been Hannah Gaylord b. 1647, Jan. 30, daughter of William and Ann Porter Gaylord of Windsor, Ct. (The said Hannah married a Crandall as is shown by the settlement of her brother Hezekiah Gaylord's estate in 1677.

Children with first wife: John II who married Elizabeth Gorton (daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth [my line]), James, Jane who married Job Babcock (son of James and Sarah), Sarah who married Josiah Witter (son of William and Annis), Peter who married Mary, Joseph who married Deborah Burdick (daughter of Robert and Ruth Hubbard), Samuel who married Sarah.

Children by second wife: Jeremiah who married Priscilla Warner (daughter of John and Ann Gorton [my line]), Eber who married (1) unknown no children, (2) ? Lanphere 4 children, (3) Mary Cottrell 5 children.

John was an early Baptist and consequently in trouble with those who ran Boston.

Torrey's New England Marriages: Crandall, John ( -1676) & 1/wf ?Sarah____ (1670) Newport/Westerly, R.I.
Crandall, John ( -1676) & 2/wf Hannah [?Gaylord} (1646-1678+),
dau William; by 16 Dec. 1677; Providence/Newport.

May this help. Tim Kilburn

Thanks, Tim. Got the profile updated

John Crandall's 1st wife

This is also a good time to remind that Elder John Crandall was not related to Sir Francis Drake. There's a disproven pedigree with
Elizabeth Drake as his mother -- she was not, nor was his father a "sir."

Erica,
Would you make a Curators note about the change of name for Elder John's 1st wife... tooooo many "resources" have Mary (?Opp?) listed as his 1st Wife... Maybe even lock the name so someone doesn't attempt to change it???

Name is already locked but there as an AKA so a search will result in the correct profile of John Crandall's wife.

Sandra W re: my 9th great aunt Joanna Lewis who married Samuel
Lewis - no one knows her parents.

The Rhode Island records burned, it makes this era particularly murky.

Obviously she's thought to have been a Crandall and she cannot be a daughter of Elder John. I haven't gone into all the arguments & speculations, I just raised up a couple of compilations I've read before & referenced them in the profiles. They are well referenced and I think the answer of "unknown" is best we can do at this time.

Let me know if you find anything ...

When I visit the Norwich Township Archives in Ontario next year, I'll take a closer look. Eve Tanner Dennis was my 4th great grandmother, who moved to Burgessville ONT from Dutchess Co, NY in 1819 with husband Robert Dennis and many children, and her descendents there have a lot of info on file on her Tanner/Lewis line.

Norwich Archives doesn't have genealogy files online, although they do have some general histories that name prominent people (not ours).

this is all amazing.ive been working on my family tree now for some time.all the people talked about in most comments are my family in one way or another with Elder John Crandall{1617-1676}an Mary Opp{1619-1670}being my 9thgrandparentsI also believe he was married 3 times,Hannah Gaylord,Elizabeth Gorton an Mary..ive gone back to1375 to a William Crandll up to my father Clayton Oliver {1925-2001}anything we cd share would be great.jccrandall59@gmail.com
