according to Medlands http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/BAVARIAN%20NOBILITY.htm#_Toc413507726 this was not one person but two sisters, one married to Otto, the other to Gebhard
I did a merge on this profile a few minutes ago, but I think it was an earlier merge that joined the two sisters
Hi,
I wondered if someone could please help me? I'm relatively new to this, but have managed to create my 'direct tree' for now (my parents, grand parents, their parents, their parents, etc....no brothers or sisters of any relatives as yet, as I'm trying to get to grips with my direct ancestors first)...but I have logged in today, and I now have thousands more people added to my tree?
I'm very confused, and wondered how I can take it back to how it used to be please? I'm not following it very well, and I feel it's hindering my until I am used to what I'm doing?
Please help. x
Private User -- the joy and the sorrow of the World Tree is that it is collaborative. You can change the incorrect information yourself, and you can contact the managers of profiles that have merged your tree into the world tree, to ask where their information came from.
This is a fine and lovely site, and you will find many interesting people here, and you can learn many things! If you need a place to work on your tree without getting distracted by discovering thousands of relatives, I hear that the My Heritage site will work for that. I myself keep my own database off the web, using a genealogy software program.
Before you decide geni is too much, though, try looking up some famous person in history you admire. Up at the top of the profile, you'll see a bar to click, to see how you are related. If ou are now hooked into the world tree, you'll probably find out you are cousins of some sort.
Another point about 'all the additions', Private User
You can 'manage' what you see on the Tree View with the "Preferences" ... the blue tab at the bottom of the window (in Tree View). For example, I most often set the 'ancestors' to 3 and the descendants to 1 or 2 -- so the view doesn't get too complicated. You can also 'tick' a box to only view direct ancestors, too.
Thank you very much for you help Anne Brannen and Dan Cornett...I think I will have a look at the points you have raised, and see if I can adjust to it, because I really do love this site...and you are right, I may very well meet some wonderful people, who I could also be related to :)
Thank you both. xx
Rebecca,
Welcome to Geni. I started as you did & as everyone else does with the direct line of ancestors... I also keep the info in a computer family tree program. I attempt to add a generation at a time there as I find it in Geni & look for as much info on each person before moving back in time... I like to verify that the info in Geni is correct (or as correct as is possible). I add to my computer the aunts & uncles as I find a new ancestor because I will sometime find info on them which I can add to their profiles & in my computer (ie. in Find A Grave with connections)--it fills in your tree. I always make sure to add some documentable info to each direct line person's About section before leaving it for a more distant ancestor. It is so frustrating sometimes to come across a direct line ancestor with vital statistics at the top but nothing in the About section!!! (It may be because he or she is an aunt/uncle for someone else???)
In the process of adding & verifying info I have found errors. I will then send a message to the managers with my question based on the info found... Sometimes it is due to a merge that shouldn't have been & it really messes up the tree & freq. requires a curator to help untangle the "mess"!!! If that happens you can request help with a problem either here or from the curator of the profile, if there is one.
Once satisfied that you have the profile with as much info as you can find "at this time", you can get it MP'd -- (Master Profile). There is a Discussion for this, but I can't remember the name at the moment. Further info can be added if you & others find more later.
As you add info to a profile, be sure to document your sources.
As I move back in time I request to co-manage those in my direct line, then I know I have been there. I occasionally will request to co-manage the profiles for the aunts/uncles if I feel it would be helpful in the future.
I freq. will click on the name of a manager in one of my direct line ancestor's profile to see how we are related. If they are relatively close in relationship to you, you may want to collaborate on that line with them... (I have sort of set 10th cousin as an outer limit to the connection for me to collaborate with, but it is an arbitrary number & is flexible depending on the interest the both of us have in that branch.) When I request to collaborate, I will usually mention the branch that I would like to collaborate on with them... In looking at the chain now between me and other Geni members I have found direct line to royalty although they are still quite a few generations from where I am in my computer. It gives me a goal to work towards--making & verifying those connections!!!
If you don't already follow this discussion, it is one well worth following. It is amazing what you can learn from the questions others raise. Everyone is so willing to offer help!!!
Enjoy the discovery of new ancestors you didn't know you had... It is an awesome journey back in time!!!
there is a very strange problem with Bertha, Margravine of Tuscany
see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bertha,_daughter_of_Lothair_II
yesterday I was sorting out the tree conflicts around her, and suddenly her correct parents Lothair II, king of Lotharingia and Waldrada of Wormsgau disappeared from the profile, and only a wrong father Louis II "le Jeune", Emperor of Italy and Of the Franks and a private mother (probably a duplicate of the correct mother linked to the wrong husband) are visible.
But when you then view her tree, the correct parents are visible! There is also a green 2 above her name, indicating there are still two sets of parents for her, but no yellow triangle to resolve the tree conflict.
There is nothing suspicious in the revision log
It seems to me that Geni itself is misbehaving here
Ard van Bergen, she has two sets of parents but it's not a conflict - it's a relatively new feature, adoptive/biological parents.
Look at her "Relatioships" tab, and you'll see the parents tagged accordingly.
Also, if you click the "2" label in the tree view, you can select which pair is displayed.
thanks for explaining Itai Meshulam
however, in the relations tab both sets of parents are listed as biological, and there is a remark that in order to resolve the conflict I should click the yellow triangle which in tree view doesn't appear
Ard van Bergen, the yellow triangle does not appear in the tree view because the X2 has precedence over it.
Do you know if Louis II "le Jeune", Emperor of Italy and Of the Franks is an adoptive father?
Itai Meshulam
Louis II (see http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ITALY,%20Kings%20to%20962.htm#Louis...) is the brother of Lotharius II, may be someone was confused by the similarity in these names. He had no connections with a woman called Waldrada, and he is just NOT the father of Bertha
can you first kill the zombie wife of Louis, I think she should be merged with Waldrada of Wormsgau and disconnected from Louis
Ard van Bergen
Should Waldrada of Wormsgau & Waldrada of Wormsgau be merged?
Are they not the same person?
And her relationship to Lothair II, king of Lotharingia be set to partner if she was his mistress?
I did a merge on Magnus I "The strong" Nilsson, king of Sweden but maybe that was a bit too hasty
trying to sort out the multiple parents of Knud V(III) av Danmark Magnusson, Konge af Danmark
Carole (Erickson) Pomeroy,Vol. Curator it seems we posted almost simultaneously on the same issue!
Yes, the two Waldrada's should be merged and set as partner (mistress) of Lotharius II
Carole (Erickson) Pomeroy,Vol. Curator and any other Curator
This user William de Cambridge has duplicated a lot of profiles in that part of the tree I have reported him because he looks like a fictitous person.
I have been working at this the whole day yesterday, last night and again this morning just merging in his duplicates. I think we are too far gone to delete them so I am just merging.them in.
