and John Sprague b. c1624 Fordington, Dorchester, Dorset, England

This John Sprague is surely different to Capt. John Sprague, of Malden born before May 23, 1624 Fordington, Dorchester, Dorset, England

They both show as married to Lydia Spraque (Goffe)

Lydia Sprague

and

Lydia Sprague

I believe she was married Capt. John Sprague, of Malden

- Notes in overview do not match profile details for John Sprague (of Duxbury? Cannot tell).
- he did not have 4 wives
- he was not married to Lydia Goffe

The Sprague families are well documented; there's a Sprague database project as well as a fair amount of primary sources.

I would start with a clean new "top of the overview" notes especially listing parents, wives & children; and give him a distinct display name.

You might need a new Lydia wife.

Then you'll need to sort children to correct parents.

Hatte Blejer on hiatus I think your John Sprague of Mendon may have been blended into this John Sprague of Duxbury & unaccountably also of Hartford?

10/7/2014 at 8:40 PM

Were they all MPs? How did this happen if so?

10/7/2014 at 9:11 PM

I cannot answer "how" any more than anyone else. I would suspect that with similar names & dates this John acquired too many wives.

I don't know the Mendon line so was hoping you might have some illumination for setting to rights.

My understanding is that the John Sprague who marrired Lydia Goffe had only one wife. After all, she outlived him. See, e.g., Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1633 (Boston, Mass.: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1995), 3: 1730; and George Walter Chamberlain, The Spragues of Malden, Massachusetts (Boston, Mass.: T. R. Marvin & Son, 1923), 83

The John Sprague that died in Mendon, also only had one wife, Elizabeth Holbrook. Like the above, she outlived him, and remarried to John Buck. See, Walter Goodwin Davis, Massachusetts and Maine families in the ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis (1885-1966): (Baltimore, Md.: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1996), 2: 29; and New England Marriages Prior to 1700, 697

Hope that helps!

We're going to have to sort by children.

Angus Wood-Salomon, Hatte Blejer on hiatus,

A little Christmas gift for Sprague lines. Please double check at your leisure. I think I have one more extra wife to find the right home for.

Private User your notes were a big help, my thanks.

So here are our three (less confused) John Spragues:

Lt. John Sprague, of Duxbury & Lebanon
son of John Sprague, Sr. & Ruth Thomas
Married 1) Lydia Sprague (parents unknown) mother of all children 2) Lois Sprague widow of Hugh Calkins

(continued in next post)

Wow Erica you truly amaze me....

:)

The Mendon children could use a double check, its the line I'm least familiar with.

For the Mendon children, my research (some of it is recent, some of it is not) is online (as almost all of mine is). See http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=ssimo...

By looking at the footnotes, one can decide how reliable it is.

12/25/2015 at 12:08 PM

Big help! I'm going to use the child list, and of course the references are good. Anyway at this era there should be vital records (famous last words).

And ouch! There for sure are time traveling children ... (sigh)

Stay tuned. I had been intrigued by John Bick (Buck?) needing to relocate himself to a groovier Rhode Island ...

12/25/2015 at 12:26 PM

(there was a big Buck family in Scituate, i would think James "Bick" is from them ...)

12/25/2015 at 5:27 PM

... Unless his name was James Bickford?

http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/gen/report/rr05/rr05_223.html#P1880

Elizabeth second married James Bickford.

Anyway - the Mendon children are sorted.

There were a lot of Spragues! Lois Sprague was a Mayflower descendant so she's not the one who fits the family story.

Got her!! I found Susanna Cobb! Even the Sprague Project doesn't have any information on her. But I found her here: https://archive.org/stream/historyofcobbfam04cobb#page/20/mode/2up/...

So, I merged her in as a child to John Cobb and Sarah Derby (check out her tree now!) http://www.geni.com/family-tree/index/6000000017230097790

This Abigail Cobb is a grandchild of Cobb-Derby -- but it's all locked (http://www.geni.com/family-tree/index/6000000027471500992)

I also merged in David Cobb as another child of Cobb-Derby.

I've lost track -- Is there anything else in this thread that needs to be done?

12/30/2015 at 8:11 PM
