My husband is a direct descendent of Jacob Jones b. 1732, 5th great grandfather, but suddenly geni.com is posting another relationship link through his wife that is very far removed..."Jacob Jones is your husband's 6th great uncle's wife's aunt's husband's third cousin's husband's grandmother's husband's son's wife's great niece's husband's first cousin's husband." How do I get it back to where it was with the most direct line. It is also messing up his other great grandfathers down the line. I am a manager and added most of the direct descendents all the way from Jacob to my husband.

Walk it back from him to his great grandfather. I'll also see if I can help here.

It's just a temporary alternative path usually until Geni re-computes every several weeks.

I'll post here if I can see it the way it should be.

I looked at it and it looks fine (5th great grandson). See if you now see that.

The direct line works when I use my husband as the one to show the relationship with Jacob, his son, etc. but when I use my own profile which is the main one for this site, it reverts back to the complicated one.

Okay, I'll look at that and see if I can help.

Geni doesn't like to trace multiple lines of descent - it tends to cache one (usually the most recently used) and work with that until something changes on the path.

I and several others have had a lot of trouble with this, due to having bottlenecks and pedigree collapse (and therefore multiple lines of descent) within the past ~300 years.

Certain areas (Eastern Shore MD/DE/VA, Anne Arundel MD, early New England) tend to turn into real bramble thickets. The Eastern Shore in particular stays that way for a LONG time, due to isolation.

Usually if you walk up the path, you can get it to recalculate. Or ask a curator to push the recalculate button.

I was able to get Susan's more direct relationship to be the preferred one.

Hatte Rubenstein Blejer speaking of the recalulate button.. Dea. William Douglas
me my mom her father donald
his mother marion her father henry
his father samuel jr douglas
his father samuel sr douglas
his mother lucretuia her father david calkins his mother lucretia calkins her mother susanna turner her mother sarah keeny rev douglas)
when it should go marion 11 Henry 10 samuel 9 Samuel 8 WILLIAM7, WILLIAM6, WILLIAM5, RICHARD4, WILLIAM3 william 2 william 1 but as long as it gets there i don't care

Michael mcCann is Dea. William Douglas' 10th great grandson is what I got.

if it were dirrect it would go thru his son and not his daugther and would be my 12th ggf not my 10th it would go him william ii richard william william samuel samuel henry marion donald my mom me. but as long as it gets there i don't see the need to reinvent the wheel

Hatte me again..Is there an easy way to fix the Jacob Jones problem I had. I appreciate that you fixed his direct like but his parents, brothers, etc are still all redirected. I'm working on a project for others in this ancestral line and it is really frustrating. Thanks again. Sue

there was an incomplete merge & data conflict on Samuel Jones

(his wife showed with an unknown husband)

I moved Samuel to the "blank node" and that may fix things.

Samuel Jones is (Susan Kay Melbostad's husband's) 6th great grandfather

Walk EACH step in the path statement below, and press the "recalc" icon if it presents. But I think the missing stepfather may have been the problem.

http://www.geni.com/path/Stephen-Erickson+is+related+to+Samuel-Jone...

Can I recalculate..if so where is the icon? It seems to be hit-and-miss as to which ones work and don't work. And there are a lot of profiles connected to this family.

See www.geni.com/projects/Working-with-Relationships/17570

PRO's see an icon in the upper right of the path if recalc is needed - looks like two arrows chasing each other in a circle. If you hover your mouse over it you'll see a date stamp also.

If there's no icon presenting no recalc is needed.

To "walk the path" you must "touch" every profile, no shortcuts.

You will only see the recalculate icon when it is more than a week since the path was calculated, not because it is needed or not.
