Why do all these Dutch 17th & 18th profiles have SV/PROG suffixes? Does it mean computer programmer? That is impossible until the 20th century.

SV = Stamvader that means ancestor 1st by that surname in the country or patriach or as in this case PROGENITOR =PROG. That is because all in South Africa stems from one person in a line/tree in a certain line

Jonathan, A more understandable word for PROGENITOR in the sense that we are using it
would have been FF (FOUNDER FATHER) and FM (FOUNDER MOTHER) . As Nicholas, explained it is the first person with a given Surname who arrived in South Africa since 1652 when the Dutch Colony was started and have an offspring here. Iff same surname people arrives who are not directly related we use an "a" infront of the number to show that there are others with the same surname We have a numbering system that we call "DVP" system It works like this . The children of a S/V PROG (first generation) is always "b" followed by a number in birth order. b1 b2 b3 and so on. b1`s children will be numbered b1c1 ,b1c2 b1c3.. (The letters are the generation and the number the birth order. Women is numbered with men but their children take their husbands number.
