Welbornes Well Mixed Up

It seems there are several Welborne families, and they are *not* related.

Captain Thomas Welbourne is the founder of the Accomack/Northampton County line, and not all of his descendants are known. His parentage is somewhat uncertain, but he probably belonged to the Welbourne family of Oswaldkirk, Yorkshire. There was a William Willbourne in Accomack before him (636), probably a relative, possibly his father.

Edward Welborn, presumptive founder of the Maryland line, came from Lincolnshire and was *not* the son of Thomas Welburne of Accomack. There were Welbornes in Maryland before him, a Samuel in 1659 and a Robert in 1662, but where they came from, and whether they were related (to each other, to Edward, or to anybody) is unknown.

Both Thomas' and Edward's lines prospered and proliferated, and occasionally seem to have been found in the same territory (the Carolinas, Tennessee, etc.). As a result they get thoroughly tangled up with each other and with other Welborn/Welburn/Wilburn families, and sorting them out is incredibly difficult.

I've yet to find the PROOF that Edward Welborn (my ancestor) came from Lincolnshire, though I've always suspected he had...but, no PROOF. There is a great myth out there of a John Welborn & the Sea Venture & the Tempest at Bermuda, but, again, no PROOF. In fact, the ship's passengers as listed online have no Welborns. But, Edward Welborn is not presumptive....I've the proof of his existence.

Edward Welborn is for real, the backstory is fictional. One of my collateral ancestors really did sail on the Sea Venture, get caught in the Tempest, etc. etc. etc. - Lt. Edward Waters. And that was by no means the end of his adventures! :-) He's my great-somethingth uncle.

There may actually be a third line with a Daniel Welborn who married a Jane Bradley. People go through all kinds of contortions to equate him with the Daniel Welburne who came down to North Carolina from Accomack and with Col. James Welbourne, but there's at least one piece of the puzzle seriously out of place. Daniel from Accomack was still a minor (and still *in* Accomack) by 1774, and the Col.'s birthdate is usually given as 1771. Moreover, once Daniel from Accomack got to North Carolina (circa 1777), he married someone named Millia - *not* Jane Bradley. The contortionists assume that Jane was his "first wife" (at age 14-16?) and died before 1780 - another catch with this is that there is no record of any Jane Bradley in Accomack, and very few Bradleys at all.

Bradleys are plentiful in Connecticut - did she/her family come down from there?

well, we're related, (19th cousins once removed); not through my Paternal (Welborn) side, but strangely enough through my Maternal side (via Newports & Cheneys).
