@Lt. Thomas Pitman, II

and related lines are a mess. I just removed the connection of a Frances Pitman (unknown) married to another Frances Pitman (unknown) and both being wives of Thomas Pitman. Both were mothers of a son named Thomas Pitman. The lines have Thomas Pitmans on top of Thomas Pitmans and to make it worse, most of them had multiples wives.

I'm afraid to try to fix it all myself for fear of making a worse mess of it. I have Googled a bunch of sites and don't know what is correct. Some sites have Thomas b. 1614 having son Thomas born 1655 but then others sites work in an additional generation where Thomas b. 1614 has a son Thomas b. 1634 who has son Thomas b. 1655, but it seems multiple generations have duplicate sons named Thomas that need merging.

The information I found to try to help sort it out is as follows:

1. Thomas b. 1614
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pittman-1252
Married 3 times:
Husband of Frances MD (Unknown) Pitman — married 1635 [location unknown]
Husband of Martha (Unknown) Pittman — married 4 Oct 1666 (to Oct 1672) in Surry County, VA
Husband of Lydia (Gray) Pittman — married 1672 in Surry County, VA

https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~morganandrelatedfamilies/genealogy/...
shows the same wives as above but adds that Martha's maiden name was Gwaltney

2. Thomas born before 1661 (usually listed as 1655)
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pittman-318
Shows married once to Elizabeth Lancaster BUT in the notes it indicates multiple wives:

Marriages
Based on Tithables, Thomas had at least 3 children (William, Edward, and Thomas Jr are listed in the Tithables before 1702)[4] before he married Mary Holleman Chambers in 1702. Tithables records show that Thomas Jr was living with Richard Holleman (his step-grandfather) in 1702, the year that Thomas Sr married Mary, Richard's daughter-in-law.[5]

Thomas married Mary Chambers (possibly Hollyman/Holleman) in 1702. They had several children; she died before 1720.[6]

NOTE: The above notes indicate Mary Chambers and Mary Hollyman (by whatever variation) were the same person; whereas some sites break them out as different women.

After Mary died, Thomas Pitman married Elizabeth Lancaster, daughter of Robert Lancaster; the marriage was recorded in 1720.[7] They were thought to be Charity's great-grand parents. [8]

Thomas named 14 children, 2 boys still minors, when his will was written in 1728. Of these, at least 3 (Thomas, William, and Edward, possibly deceased young since he appears in the Tithables only once in 1699[9]) were from an unknown mother; 7 others (including Ambrose) were likely from Mary; and Elizabeth was the mother of the youngest four.

Lists wives as Elizabeth Lancaster and Mary Hallowan (seen elsewhere as Halloway and other variations)

https://gw.geneanet.org/monartque?lang=en&n=pittman&oc=0&am...
Shows him born 1650 and married to Elizabeth Lancaster, Mary Chambers and another unnamed wife

3. Thomas born c. 1684 is also shown as married to Elizabeth Lancaster
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pittman-317

Nowhere did I find information on the Thomas supposedly born 1634 as shown here:
Lt. Thomas Pitman, II

Even the notes on that profile don't seem to be for that Thomas but are identical to the notes for Thomas born c. 1650-1655, or before 1661.

I had worked on these lines back in August and don't recall them being this mixed up at that time but I see that some additional merges were made on some of the profiles in September. I don't know if that's when/how things got confused or what. Most of what I had done was just adding notes to their profiles. I certainly don't recall leaving things in the mess they are now.

My mind is just totally boggled trying to sort the Thomases and their wives out. I was going to attempt to merge the duplicates but then realized there may be an unnecessary generation in the mix and that I better get some help.

Thanks in advance for helping get these connections sorted.

I'm continuing to research on the folks and found notes that Martha shown as maiden name Gwaltney on one site was actually a widow Gwaltney, maiden name still unknown.

I had disconnected Thomas Pitman I from the parents connected to him once again...yet another Thomas Pitman and wife Jane West. Not a single site I've seen has had them listed as his parents, all sites shown unknown parents for Thomas b. 1614. It looks like perhaps that couple keeps getting added by bad gedcom merges. If there is a source validating them as the parents of Thomas b. 1614, I haven't seen it and it's not in the profiles.

This link someone had posted in Lt. Thomas Pitman's profile helps clarify the various Thomas' and their wives! http://sites.rootsweb.com/~vaschsm/PitmanT.rtf

It's a 50-page document that is protected when I open it, so I can't copy and paste from it, but it states that Thomas b. 1614's 3 wives were France (maiden name unknown), Unknown widow Wall (NOT Frances Wall as those names seem to have been merged in error) due to a step-son of Thomas' named Joseph Wall, and Martha who was widow of both Thomas Atkinson and Thomas Gwaltney.

This document says that Thomas who was son of Thomas I and wife Frances was born 1636 in England. He's the one with an unknown wife and a wife named Lydia. Lydia was the widow of Samuel Judkins. This Thomas Pitman's son named Thomas was from the first wife whose name is unknown. This son was born c. 1658, so there was an extra generation in there afterall! This third Thomas was the one who married Mary Chambers, Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) and an unnamed wife.
The document clarifies about Mary Chambers that she had been married to William Holleman. The document actually addresses the confusion on these men and their wives, so it's not just those of us on Geni working on the lines who have had difficulty.

The document states that Thomas Pitman who married Elizabeth Lancaster was the son of the above Thomas and the unnamed wife. This Thomas was born c. 1684.

The document is well-sourced and I would think it's a better guide than the online sites that have confusing connections.

The document above that is so well referenced begins with Thomas Pitman b. 1614 and does not list any parents for him, so once again I think the current parents connected - f Thomas Pitman and Jane West - should be removed and maybe once all this is sorted out his profile locked so incorrect unsourced parents can't keep being connected to him

I haven't gotten around to where this wife fits in but from the sourced info I've shared, she's not the wife of of the Thomas she's connected to:

Anne Gay Pittman

As I stated early on, these connections are so confusing I was reluctant to try to help sort them out, but after reading through that document I'm so grateful there was a link for in those profiles, I've done my best to fix the connections in my own direct line and praying really hard I got it sorted correctly.

Going back to the confusion on Ann Pittman (Coffield), there are two profiles for her, the one listed above which is incorrect and this one which I believe is the correct one:

Anne Gay Pittman

I really do think the confusion was created by multiple gedcom uploads. I've done the best I can on what I could sort out. I didn't try to fix the Anne Coffield merge that needs to be done and didn't disconnect the parents for Capt. Thomas Pitman I because I've done that once and someone added them back even though I have seen nothing to validate that connection.

Thank you for your time and efforts!

Lydia Pittman is My ninth great grandmother.
Following.

Cynthia Curtis, A183502, US7875087 more lines we share! As the connections are now, Lydia Pittman (unknown) is my 14th great grandfather's 3rd wife.

I may have been the guilty party. I merged my gedcom Aug 1. I have had trouble sorting the Pitmans out on Ancestry and have considered deleting them from my tree there. I assume it falls apart after Ambrose Pitman that is where the innumerable Thomas Pitmans start.

Let me know what I can do from my end.

I do like seeing new gedcom uploads because I know it means more connections but I think Geni should allow for Basic users to be able to merge/see merges as well as have a system in place that will help the Geni user after the upload because it is not a one step process
Nice to meet you, cousin George!

You are so right, Cynthia!

But, even with the gedcom tangles, if everyone just keeps working to sort them out, the tree keeps growing and getting better. :)

I thought I my line was correct to Thomas Pitman father of Ambrose Pitman. However, I realized I had the wrong birth date for that Thomas.
I also found a discussion on Ancestry from 2014 that discusses some of the issues with this line. How can I share that with the group? Quote here?

Just found this http://sites.rootsweb.com/~vaschsm/PitmanT.rtf
Don't know if it will help.

This is the most cogent representation of the Pitman line that I have seen. Rearranging and deleting Ancestry tree to correlate with these findings. Anyone have anything to add?

Maybe this will help straighten out the Geni tree.

Thanks, George. I'm downloading the file you posted. Can't wait to look at the info. :)

Rick Gatewood Yes, that’s what I used in trying to sort the Pitman’s. I work at “the tree top”, not sure how far I got with the Geni profiles, and may have run into a wife conflict / dispute so stopped. I copy / pasted “snippets” into the profiles; hope they got read and used ! Glad to see someone else as impressed with the study as I was.

Re: re introduced conflict after getting it straightened it out before.

How well I know that feeling. :). This is where Geni curators can help. Request MPs (Master profiles). “two MPs cannot be merged together.” If the profile is already M.P., request relationships be locked (best when the family group is complete: parents, spouses, siblings, children). Be sure that at the very top of the “about” the critical relationships are clearly visibly written out: Name, parents, spouses - don’t make anyone fish for this vital info, and don’t “rely” on the tree configuration to supply it, either.
