See overview for link. On July 3, William, Bishop of Dromore, was commissioned to veil Alice, widow of Sir John Savile. This seems to be close to HIS death date. Next is written "On Jan.14, 1493-4, Sir John Waterton, Knt., administered the effects of Lady Savile" This sounds more like a response to her death a few years after his. I've changed the death date here because this info came from Yorkshire Archaeological Journal, vol. 25, pp. 1-47 (1920). If this source has been discredited or superseded, please annotate and add info here. Thanks Suzanne Saunders

I found this reference to this book...
A Companion to Pastoral Care in the Late Middle Ages (1200-1500)
By Ronald Stansbury
in a section by Susan M.B. Steuer, the practice of Veiling is explained and examples particular to the Yorkshire area are noted. Vowesses were honorable widows who by taking the veil, vowing perpetual chastity, could step outside of some of both clerical oversight and family pressure. It also seems to have been a good way for a woman to secure property.

Note 22 is particularly interesting.

This event might also be found in ecclesiastical records of the time.
