Nansemond Certificate 17 May 1797

Norfolk Co., VA 17 May 1797

This doth certify that William Bass, son of John Bass and grandson of William Bass is of English and Indian descent and Is not a Negro nor yet a Mulattoe as by some falsely and maliciously stated. His late Mother Sarah Ann Bass, was a virtuous woman of Indian descent a daughter of Symon Lovina and Joan Tucker lawfully begotten. Said Joan Tucker was a sister of Robin Tucker, a Christian Indian of ye Nansemond nation. The said William Bass, the elder, was a son of Mary Bass and William Bass, Sr. Mary was a daughter of Great Peter King of ye Nansemond. These are of common knowledge.
All of the Basses of this County descend from Capt Nathaniell Basse as satisfactorily proved by the records presented. Test Wm Portlock, Jr.
(William Portlock was clerk of court and a landowner, hence the Portlock area of South Norfolk bears his name.)

Well, of course, that was attested long before DNA testing was available to prove one way or the other.

Debbie Gambrell I actually think it may be time to LOCK the About as well... many newcomers to genealogy are not aware of the history and insist on adding such things that are already there and already explained why they did that historically and politically

They're not my direct line but are for my sons on the paternal side. There are almost 50 profile managers and a curator, so I'm not the authority for having it locked. I'm only on there and follow it because of the connection to my sons, but for their lines I would like to be sure it's accuarte.

Debbie Gambrell I worked (and still do when I see errors) very hard on the Bass profiles and am so grateful for the curators who MP'd them once they were ready. Problem is that the old myths and etc creep back in in addition to the usual bad merges and such that are almost to be expected but for some of these profiles it is akin to vandalism or propagation of past errors or outright lies. Since the passing of the wonderful Bass historian, I have not been in contact with many about these lines but I do feel quite protective of them. The historian was convince the A haplo Bass is the grandfather represented in my DNA and I trust her instincts and miss her very much.

My "Senegambian".
Likely via my dad's mom's WEBBER.

Thank you for watching over these profiles, too, Debbie Gambrell ! <3

Yeah, I'm protective of my sons' paternal lines since Len counts on me to do his genealogy. I want to leave him as accurate a legacy as I can. :)

His stepfather, Capt. John Basse, Sr. , is my aunt's 8th g-grandfather ! She's descended down the direct paternal line from him. (But I notice there are 4 critical inconsistencies in the line. So I guess I'll try to look at those now.)

The document about William is false, and we know that. William grandfather of this William was both Nansemond and African. The court disallowed it.

This William is also the great grandson of Keziah Elizabeth Bass and an unknown African. So of course he is one half Nansemond and one half African. This document known as the Portlock document was written to remove the African blood line from the Nansemond tribe.

It was on the Nansemond web site for a few years until the leading Bass family genealogist put so much heat on them that they took it down and admitted it was false.

I don't know how we can prevent these false documents from showing up again and again but they cause much confusion for people unfamiliar with them..

I agree, the About section should be locked as well as the profiles of these people.
