ID: I266 Name: Adam YAGER Sr. Surname: Yager Given Name: Adam Suffix: Sr. Sex: M Birth: 29 Sep 1707 in Faulkenstein, NeubergHesse Ger Death: BEF 23 Jan 1794 in , Madison, Va. _UID: F2502F907B41D511BD9EBDC3D79617313320 Note: from Betty Johnson: Just to complicate your life, Nancy Moyers Dodge and I have come up with a working hypothesis that Adam Yager's first wife was surnamed Kabler / Cobler and his second wife is a Moyers. We'll let you know how we get along with that. I know you can hardly wait....ha!

Gary Zimmerman and Johni Cerny in "Before Germanna" had identified the first record as Adam Jager. The record does not actually give the name of the child. It only says a "son born to Niclaus Jeger from Falckenstein". I think it is an accurate conclusion that this is Adam Jager. The actual record from 1708 was in poor condition, very faint, difficult to read with a couple of black spaces in the record. The 1716 record was in good condition. Here are the translations: 1708: On the 30th of September, a son was born to Niclaus Jeger from Falckenstein and his housewife, and on the 8th of October the child was baptized in Winnweiler. The Godfathers were Johann Adam Jeger, a soldier from Wolfstein; Johann Conradt (here there is a blank space in the record) -- the writer's son from Falkenstein; Claus Jeger from Munchweiler (here there is another blank space in the record) -- his daughter Barbara. 1716: In April, on Easter Tuesday, a baby daughter was born to Niclas Jeger of Falckenstein and she was later baptized at the Dom Quasimod. The Godparents were Johann Theobaldt Coestner of Falckenstein and Anna Margretha, the wife of Michel Jeger of the old Glasshutte. The child was named Anna Margetha. The Christening date of Adam Jager is in 1708 in Winnweiler. This indicates his birth was 1708 not 1707. Betty Johnson's book on John Yager on pag 28 and 29 shows the source for the 1707 date as a note from the Hebron Register. The Christening Records at Winnweiler would be the more reliable source. Margie's record. Kay Yeager's record shows a descendent who claims Adam was from London, England and came here in 1713 or 14 with his father Nicholas who had two brothers, Vige Adam and Henri. He and his father said to have served in Colonial Wars. Unclear if his mother was Mary Wilhoit or Anna Maria Sieber, Old Nick's first wife. Adam was documented as having provided 300# beef for patriot army.

Will of Adam Yager Sr. - A Transcript

Will Book 1, p.24-27 Madison Co, VA:

In the name of God amen I, Adam Yager, of the county of Madison being in perfect mind and memory, but calling to mind the uncertainty of this life do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner of form following.

First recommending my soul to almighty God assuredly hoping and trusting for eternal salvation through the merits of sufferings of my blessed Saviour Jesus Christ. As of touching my worldly estate which it hath pleased God to bless me with, I leave and give in manner of form following:

First my will and desire is that my two old negros, Tom and Lucy shall be set at liberty. Neither of my children nor any other person to claim any right in or to them. All the estate that I have heretofore given to any of my children that they are or have been in possession of I do not consider as my estate, but theirs to whom it was given. I give to my four sons, Michael, John, Adam and Godfrey all my books to be equally divided between them by lot or other ways as they may agree. I bequeath to my son Godfrey Yagar all the land of plantation whereon I now live containing by patent one hundred acres together with sixty one acres I bought of Nelson to him, his forever. I also give to my son Godfrey any horse or mare I shall be possessed with at my death, as also my best saddle and bridle. I give unto my daughter Barbara Chelf the bed and furniture whereon I lay to her and her heirs forever. All the residue of my estate both real and personal my will it shall be sold but no person shall be allowed to bid but my four sons, Michael, John, Adam and Godfrey, and my two grandsons Adam Clore and Benjamin Yager and the money arising from the sale to be divided into six parts and my four sons before named or in case of their death their legal representatives to have four of the six parts. My grandchildren the heirs of Nicholas Yager deceased one other part. My other grand children the heirs of Pete Clore begotten by my daughter Barbara the other part of the said parts so given to my said grand-children, shall be paid into the hands of Adam Clore and Benjamin Yager to be by them paid to their brothers and sisters as before directed as they shall come of age or marry. Whereas my granddaughter Elizabeth Hayman, daughter of Peter and Barbara Clore is dead. My will and desire is that Adam Clore shall pay the part would fall unto to her children as they shall come of age or marry. In case any of my grand children, either the children of Nicholas Yager or the children of Pete Clore shall die before they come of age or shall marry, that their part shall be divided between their surviving brothers and sisters. But in order that my executors hereafter named shall not be distressed, I allow them eighteen months to pay any legacy I have here given. My executors hereafter named, should they judge it would be to their interest may suffer other bidders at the sale of my estate.

I do hereby appoint and nominate my four sons, Michael Yager, John Yager, Adam Yager and Godfrey Yager to be executors of this my last will land testament revoking all other wills by me heretofore made in testamony whereof I have hereunto placed my hand and seal this ninth day of September 1793.

The next morning (the second day) we drove on a short distance to Falkenstein where the Yagers lived. Falkenstein centered on a castle built on a rocky spur of land above the surrounding land. The remains of the castle are still present and indicate a rather cramped living space. Apparently the Falkensteins were a family of some note even though their seat of power was remote. The modern town of Falkenstein is a linear village built along the road which itself hugs the side of a hill (the highest in the Palatinate). Since the Yagers were not originally from Falkenstein, one wonders why they moved there. It is easier to see why they left Falkenstein for America since the opportunities in Falkenstein were probably very limited. Going to church in Marienthal or in Winnweiler from Falkenstein was not easy as it would have involved travel up and down hills. The biggest attraction of Falkenstein today is the view it affords. From Falkenstein, we drove to Annweiler, a small town situated in a valley. Our interest in Annweiler is that Johann Caspar Stoever was a teacher there before going on to America. John Blankenbaker 5-31-2002 Some months back I sent a note to the list regarding the books mentioned in the will of Adam Yager, son of Nicholas. Adam stated his books were to be divided among his 4 living sons. The will was proved in Madison Co VA on 23 January 1794. It made this bookworm / collector happy to know that my ancestor owned books and valued them enough to include them in his bequests. We know that his eldest son Michael (also my ancestor) died shortly after his father, because Michael's will was proved a little over a month later, 27 Feb. 1794. Since his death occurred so soon after his father's, I wondered whether Michael had received any of his Adam's books. I may have got my answer today. As I reorganized and filed papers, I glanced absently through each one. For the first time I noticed that at Michael's estate sale held on 25 Nov 1806, Benjamin Huffman bought "Books" for 19 shillings / 4 pence. Here's to Mr. Huffman, who also valued books! Betty Elizabeth Yates Johnson jjandbj11@comcast.net PS: Other buyers at the sale were: Michael Yager [Michael's son], John Yager. S Carolina [Michael's son],Samuel Yager [Michael's son], Absolom Shurley, John A. Yager [Michael's nephew], Rachel Yager [Michael's daughter], Robert Brown [Michael's son-in-law], Elliot Finks, Simeon Lewis, Thomas & Z. Shurley, Thomas Chapman, Mark Finks, Dennis Crow, Edward Gaines, Abraham Lewis Jr., James Finks, James Story, John Gallihew, James Shotwell, James Berry, Martin Barnes, Capt. Abraham Lewis, Gabriel Delaney, Harvey Herndon, Elijah Yager [Michael had 2 nephews named Elijah of appropriate age], William Smith, and Michael Miller

I went to the Family History Center in Kaiserslautern today and talked with a couple of Germans, who are assisting me with researching some German records. They are working on translating the baptismal records of Adam Jager b.30 Sep 1708 and Anna Margaretha b.14 Apr 1716. It will be a few weeks before they have them ready, but we looked at them together today and they gave me a rough verbal translation. Unfortunately, there are a couple of problems with the record of Adam Jager. The biggest problem is that it is very unclear and the words are difficult to make out. They have had several people look at the records to make sure they have an accruate transcription of the records. The dates can be made out and are the correct dates given by others for Adam Jager. The name of the child (Adam) does not appear in the record. Godparents are Johann Adam Jager, a soldier of Wolfstein and Barbara, daughter of Claus Jager of Munchweiler. They said Claus might be Nicalaus....it is just difficult to make out. I think that it is probably Nicalaus becaus there is Nicolaus Jager and his wife Gertraud of Munchweiler listed as godparents at the christening of Maria Gertraud Jager in 1711. Also Zimmerman and Cerny in Before Germanna mention that Nicolaus b.1667 and his wife Gertraud had a daughter Barbara, b.26 Nov 1690 at Weichersbach. Georgia -- Do not be shy about asking questions! The Wilhoits always make me crazy. They were so prolific, and always used the same names for their children. And I would be happy to have anyone correct me because what is in my database has been accumulated over the years from various places and I am not the best source noter. In answer to these questions: "Virginia, am I correct that you are descended through Michael Wilhite's son, John (m. Margaret Weaver) who was a brother to my Matthias? Was the Mary Margaret Wilhoit you mention who m. John W. Yager their daughter? And was John W. Yager the man who went to Philadelphia to bring the organ back to Hebron Church?" Yes, I am descended (like so very many of us!) from the immigrant whose name I have as "John Michael Wilhoit." I refer to him as a "Jr." because I understand that his father was "Hans Michael Wilhoit." I have John Michael Wilhoit, Jr.'s wife as Anna Maria Hengsteler. I am descended from their son, John Christian Wilhoit. John Christian was brother to your ancestor Matthias. John Christian married Margaret (or Waldburga) Weaver. One of their children was Mary Margaret Wilhoit who married Blind John Yager. Mary Margaret is NOT the same as Margaret Wilhoit who married John W. Yager. John W. did NOT buy the organ, it was his father, Blind John Yager. John Christian Wilhoit and Matthias Wilhoit had another brother, Adam. Adam and Catherine Broyles had a son, George. George and Elizabeth Utz had a daughter, Margaret, who married the non-buyer of the organ, John W. Yager, son of Blind John Yager and Mary Margaret Wilhoit. Margaret would have been her mother-in-law Mary Margaret's 1st cousin, once removed, and her husband's 1st cousin, twice removed. Because of Margaret, I have some double cousins. Perhaps I am my own cousin. Then when I get into Carpenter territory, I have triple and quadruple cousins, but that is another story. There are other Margaret Wilhoits, as well. I have in my database another Margaret who married John W.'s brother Joseph. I do not know if that is correct or who she might be. I also have listed in my database a Margaret who was a sister to Mary Margaret, daughter of John Christian Wilhoit. I have her listed as marrying John Gaar. I would welcome any information about them. Virginia Nuta vrnuta@earthlink.net Hi Ginny, Cuddin Cathi is right. our Blind John had a sister Barbara who was married to Peter Clore then Phillip Chelf (Jelf). It was indeed this Barbara's son Adam Clore who was mentioned in his grandfather Adam's September 9, 1793 will. Here is the extract of his life including those named in his will from Arthur Leslie Keith in the William and Mary Quarterly. Adam Yeager was born Sept. 29, 1707. He married Oct. 1727 to Susanna Cobler (Kobler). On Nov. 24, 1736 Adam Yeager and wife Susanna sold to Frederick Cobler 290 acres. Witnesses are Jorg Utz and Marks Frick (Finks?) On Feb. 28, 1762 Adam Yeager and Susannah, his wife sold to son John Yeager, parcel of land, part of Nicholas Yeager's patent for 400 acres, dated June 24, 1726. On same day they sold to son Nicholas Yeager, part of the same patent, land joining Philip Powlet (Pauletz). On Sept. 18, 1766 they sold to Adam Gaar, 100 acres. This is the last appearance of Susannah Yeager. On the communion rolls down to the 24 Sunday after Trinity, about November, 1793. His will, dated Sept. 9, 1793, was probated Jan. 23, 1794. In this will he mentions sons Michael, John, Adam, and Godfrey; grandchildren, the heirs of son Nicholas Yeager, dec'd; "grandchildren, the heirs of Peter Clore begotten by my daughter Barbara; children of my deceased granddaughter Elizabeth Wayman, daughter of Peter and Barbara Clore"; grandsons Adam Clore and Benjamin Yeager; daughter Barbara Chelf. He appoints his four living sons as executors. Witnesses are John Smith, Joseph Carpenter, Cornelius Carpenter. John Smith, Samuel Carpenter, and John Deer sign as security for executors. This will proves that Adam Yeagers Barbara was married twice, first to Peter Clore and second to Philip Chelf (Jelf). Thom Faircloth Adam Yawger born at Fulkenston near Dusseldorp in the Dukedom of Neuberg in the Empire of Germany having Settled and Inhabited for Several years in the County of Spotsilvania in this Colony And now made Application to me for the Benefit of Naturalization I believe this is a link to the transcription in question. I have known for some time that I'm descended from Adam and Nicholas, but just recently discovered the GERMANNA connection. I'm fascinated and a bit awed at the work that has been done. John, here's a transcription of Adam Yager's naturalization certificate, now owned by Mrs. Crigler, who graciously allowed me to copy it a few months ago: "William Gooch Esq. His Majesty's Lt. Governor & Commander in Chief of Virginia. To All to whom these Presents shall come. Greeting. Whereas by one act of Assembly made at the Capital the Twenty third of October in the year one Thousand Seven hundred & five, For the better Settling & Peopling this His Majestys Colony & Dominion. And Adam Yawger born at Fulkenston near Dusseldorp in the Dukedom of Neuberg in the Empire of Germany having Settled and Inhabited for Several years in the County of Spotsilvania in this Colony And now made Application to me for the Benefit of Naturalization, and before me taken the Oaths Prescribed by Law and Subscribed the Test: I do hereby pursuant to the said Authority Hereby Declare the Said Adam Gawger to be to all Intents and Purposes, Fully & Compleatly Naturalized And to Have & enjoy to Him & His Heirs the same Immunitys and Rights of & unto the Law & Priviledges of this Colony & Dominion as Fully & Amply as any of His Majestys Natural born Subjects Have & Enjoy within the Same, and as if He had been born within any of His Majesty's Realm or Dominions according to the aforesaid Act Saving always in such matters & Things Which by the Laws of England Concerning the Plantations He is Disabled. Given under My Hand & the Seal of the Colony at Williamsburgh this Nineteenth day of September Seventeen Hundred & Thirty in the Fourth Year of His Majesty's Reign. William Gooch" Adam was baptized in a church in Winnweiler. His family attended Church in Marienthal which easier to get to from Falkenstein than Winnweiler (very rugged and steep roads). I do not know if or when he was naturalized. After his family had served out their forced indenture-ship Adam was able to exercise his right to a land paten on the White Oak Run just outside present day Madison and close to his father's land patent. It was located on what is now known as Ruth Road just outside of Madison. When you take Ruth Road out of Madison, you will go down a very steep and sharp curve in the road as the road crosses the "run". The Payne Cemetery is in a field north west of this point. A side note: A piece of Adam's original land patent was still in the hands of his descendents as of 1996-977. I know because I was trying to buy it and I documented it's origin back to 1727 (approximately) before trying to put a bit on the land. Adam's son, Blind John inherited it from Adam. Blind John was Thom Faircloth's 6th(??) great grandfather. Blind John's Daughter inherited the land and a Payne married a granddaughter and the land became known as Payne land. The last Germanna owner was the daughter of Yager Payne. The daughter was selling the land in 1996-97. The Payne family cemetery in Madison, I believe is on land that originally was own by either Nicholas Jager or Adam Jager/Yager. Adam's father's naturalization document would be very similar and close to the same date. They both exercised their land patent before 1730. fondly yours, Corlee Morris 7th Great Grand daughter of Adam Yager Born 1707 Following from Cathi Clore Frost If you can add anything to the following -- please do! Also, does any one have a copy of the 24 November 1736 deed of Adam Yager and wife Susanna to Frederick Cobler, the 17 October 1747 deed of Mathew Smith to Jacob Berler, and/or the inventory made in June 1763 of Jacob Broyles? Thanks, Cathi Adam Jäger/Yager (Nicholas) was born 30 September 1708 in Falkenstein, Pfalz (Germany) and was baptized 8 October 1708 in Winnweiler, Pfalz (Germany). He died between 27 November 1793 when he last appeared on the Hebron Church communion lists and 23 January 1794 when his will was proved in Madison County, Virginia. He married Susanna ___* October 1727 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. She died after deed of 18 September 1766 which is her last mention in records and probably before the Hebron Lutheran Church communion lists begin in 1775 as no wife appears with Adam. *Susanna's surname is unknown at present. Searches by Zimmerman and Cerny of the German records indicate that it is not Kapler/Cobler as previously speculated (Gary J. Zimmerman and Johni Cerny, Before Germanna #10: The Ancestry of the Yager, Stolts, Crees and Beyerbach Families, (Bountiful, UT: American Genealogical Lending Library, 1990)). The Garr Genealogy, p 522 gives her name as ___ Kobler with the note that the record was furnished by Miss Priscilla S. Yager of Madison C.H., Va. Her first name Susanna is known from several deeds although the possibility that Adam had more than one wife cannot be ruled out. Known children of Adam Yager and Susanna ___ : 1. In his will, written 9 September 1793 and recorded in Madison County, Virginia Will Book 1, pages 24-27, Adam Yager first wills that "my two old negroes Tom and Lucy shall be set at liberty." He also states that he does not consider anything already given to his children as part of his estate but as theirs. Adam's four sons Michael, John, Adam and Godfrey were to equally divide all his books. Son Godfrey Yager received the land and plantation where Adam lived containing 100 acres along with 60 acres Adam "bought of Nelson" as well as any horse or mare Adam possessed at his death along with Adam's best saddle and bridle. Daughter Barbara Chelf was to receive "the bed and furniture whereon I ly". The rest of the estate was to be sold with no one but the four sons Michael, John, Adam and Godfrey and Adam's grandsons Adam Clore and Benjamin Yager bidding. The proceeds of the sale were to be divided into six parts with each son or his legal representatives receiving one part and grandchildren, heirs of Nicholas Yager, were to receive one part and grandchildren, "heirs of Peter Clore begotten by my daughter Barbara" were to receive the final part. Grandsons Adam Clore and Benjamin Yager were to be paid from the estate and to pay their siblings as they came of age or married. As "grand daughter Elizabeth Wayman daughter of Peter and Barbara Clore is dead", Adam Clore was directed to pay her part to her children as they came of age or married. If any grandchild, children of Nicholas Yager or Peter Clore, died before they came of age or married, their part was to be divided among their siblings. Adam allowed 18 months for any legacy to be paid "that my executors hereafter named shall not be distressed" and also allowed that other bidders might be allowed at his estate sale "should they judge it would be to their interest". Sons Michael Yager, John Yager, Adam Yager and Godfrey Yager were named executors. Witnesses were John Smith, Joseph Carpenter and Cornelius Carpenter. The will was recorded 23 January 1794 after being exhibited in Court and proved by the oaths of John Smith, Joseph Carpenter and Cornelius Carpenter. Probate was granted Adam Yager, John Yager and Godfrey Yager with John Smith, Samuel Carpenter and John Deer acting as security. 23 January 1794 George Crisler, Samuel Carpenter, Andrew Carpenter & John Smith or any three of them ordered to appraise the slaves (if any) and personal estate of Adam Yeager deceased and return the appraisement to the next Court The inventory and appraisement of Adam Yager's estate totaling £272.5.0 by George Christler, Samuel Carpenter and John Smith was returned to court and recorded 27 February 1794 Sources: Winnweiler Parish Register John Blankenbaker, The Hebron Communion Lists: Communion Lists of the Hebron Lutheran Church 1775 to 1812 Madison, Virginia, (Chadd's Ford, PA 2001) Madison County, Virginia Will Book 1 Hebron Lutheran Church Register, Volume 2 Culpeper County, Virginia Deed Book E, 197 Virginia Land Office Patent Book 13, 476 Naturalization certificate of Adam Yager, transcribed by Elizabeth Yates Johnson Spotsylvania County, Virginia Order Book 1732-1734, 162 Arthur Leslie Keith, "The German Colony of 1717 Part 2", William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Volume XXVI, No. 3, (January 1918) Barbara Vines Little, Orange County, Virginia Tithables 1734-1782 Part One, (Orange, VA: Dominion Market Research Corp., 1988) Virginia Land Office Patent Book 17, 327. In the newsletter "Beyond Germanna," v. 12, no. 2, p. 678, John Blankenbaker, ed., transcribed a handwritten secular note from the last page of the Hebron Church Register, as follows: (The bracketed material is J.B.'s) "Frankenstein instead of Folkenstein one time This is taken from an old German Book wrote by Godfrey Yager Adam Yager Senior son of Nicholas Yager Was Born in Germany at a place called Falkenstein, on the 29th day of Septem -ber 1707. Was married in 1727 in October his son Michael Yager Born June 29th 1728 his Daughter Barbara Yager Born September 7th 1730 his Son John Yager Born September 15th 1732 [apparently 1732 was originally written as 1731] his Son Nicholas Yager Born 1735 [no day given for Nicholas] his Son Adam Yager Born May 9th 1738 his Son Godfrey Yager Born June 6th 1747 Godfrey Yager died on the 26th May 1819 [or 1817?] 1763 [?]" The original roll of microfilm which John Blankenbaker copied is located at the Library of Virginia in Richmond: Accession 29966; Misc. Reel 346. John told me that the pastor of Hebron later allowed him to view the original church books, which are kept in a bank vault, and they were easier to read than the microfilm. Note that Godfrey's year of death is definitely 1819, per Madison County VA court records. Betty Johnson 1st Source: Hebron Lutheran Church (Madison, Va.). Records, 1750-1866. Church records collection, The Library of Virginia, Richmond, Va. 23219 The next to last page of the church register reads: "A record of the old Yagers{ The last page of the church register reads: "Frankenstein instead of Folkenstein one time This is taken from an old German Book wrote by Godfrey Yager Adam Yager Senior son of Nicholas Yager Was Born in Germany at a place called Falkenstine, on the 29th day of Septem -ber 1707. The introduction to "The Family of Adam Yager, by the editor John Blankenbaker, reads: "On the very last page of volume 2 of the Hebron Church Register there is a secular note pertaining to the family of Adam Yager. It is impossible to tell when it was placed there though there is a hint that the original information might have been written in 1763. [The blank with a question mark which I inserted above /eyj] This original statement was later copied into the Register where this copyist or another person added at least one line of information. To our sorrow Godfrey failed to note the name of his mother. The image below was taken from a microfilm recording of the Register which has many 'fly specks.' These have been removed by processing the image with a computer program. It is hoped that no information has been altered in the process. The ink blots and the cross outs have been left in the image. At the very bottom, there is a date, possibly reading as 1763, which might be the date that Godfrey wrote the original data." luv you,Betty There is a will filed in Madison County Virginia dated 1794 for Adam Yaeger. I think it must be Adam Jr. In the will he mentions sons: Michael, John, Adam and Godrey. He also mentions grandsons Adam Clore and Benjamin Yaeger. There are several other names mentioned in the will also. You may also want to search for German Lutheran Churches in Madison County and Culpepper County. From what I've gathered the Yaegers were not part of the actual Germanna settlements and did live very close to them. There is a DNA connection between two descendants of Adam Yager (1707-1794) of Madison, VA and one descendant of Adam Yeager/Yager (first appeared in 1754) of Woodstock, VA. These two towns are are divided by the Blue Ridge Mountains and are just about 30 miles apart by the way the crow flies, but about 120 miles by roads. In fact the two great great grandsons of Adam Yager of Madsion, VA are both genetically closer to the Adam Yeager of Woodstock, Va than they are to each other. Adam Yager of Madsion, VA, Great Great Grandson RL Yeager matches 63 out of 67 markers with Adam Yeager of Woodstock, Va. Adam Yager of Madsion, VA, Great Great Grandson ED Yeager matches 64 out of 67 markers with Adam Yeager of Woodstock, Va. But Adam Yager of Madsion, VA, Great Great Grandson RL Yeager only matches 62 out of 67 markers with his distant cousin ED Yeager. They all share the unique Haplogroup R1*. So they are related back beyond Adam Yager (1707-1794) of Madison, VA and Adam Yeager/Yager of Woodstock, VA. So far, none of the other Six Yeager Y-chromsomes in the Yeager DNA Study are even close to the three Yeagers in the Germanna DNA Project. The Germanna/Yeager Y-Chromosomes are Haplogroup R1* while the other Six Yeagers are J1, J2, R1a1 and R1b1b2a1b. The Haplogroups must match if the Y-Chromsome Markers are going to match. -- Sincerely yours, Corlee Morris Germanna DNA Project Change Date: 6 Aug 2007 at 01:00:00
