I believe you have the wrong children for this Joseph Friend. Anna Friend is my fourth great-grandmother. The Find-A-Grave info I have on her father has him born in 1775, Ireland, (which admittedly could be in error) and died in 1843 in Elkton, Illinois. Anna, who married John Sevier (1796-1863) had seven children by John and the two ultimately left Kentucky to follow her parents, Joseph and Ellender Matteson Friend to Illinois. Please share the direct link to the Israel Frande/Friend family. I simply cannot find it.

Thank you,

April Payne

Hi April, thanks for your message. Joseph is not in my direct line and the information I have on him came through Geni from matches with other members' profiles on Joseph. I have no doubt you are correct but I suggest you approach the other eight members who manage Joseph's profile to have his details altered. I did not renew my Geni profile and don't have access to do alterations. Good luck! Marea

Made a different Joseph Friend, of Elkton, Illinois as described at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/118947445/joseph-friend as father of Anna Sevier and sent you a request to add yourself as manager. Please fill in sources and biographical details as you know them.

Erica Howton, I would be more than glad to take this up. I have added the Frande/Friend line to my Ancestry tree, not once but twice. Still, I cannot find any actual way to verify if this is his family. I have the F-A-G, his marriage record to Elon Ellender Matheson, but very little else. This is my task most recently as he is one of my Brick Walls. I shall see what I can do.

Thanks, April. I’m trying to clean up the Frend families now, they’ve gotten sloppy.

I agree that a Swedish girl seems less likely for your Illinois guy, and that she could have floated in from another Frande line out of the New Sweden Colony. But - how Scandinavian was your Joseph, have you figured that out yet? If he was, he wasn’t from the Massachusetts family; they didn’t get Scandinavians until later.

That I don't know, Erica. I only know that the Joseph Friend from the Friend family has no clear link to my Joseph. Whereas the one from MA was born in 1776, which is far closer than 1782. Plus, he died in Elkton, IL in 1843. I do have land records to show his migration from NC to IL, if that helps at all. And for the fact that Anna also died in Schuyler County, Illinois, bears a little weight. I shall try to transfer the land records to the new profile sometime today. I have no information on his Scandinavian at all. No DNA to draw from. This is on my late father's side. We didn't have the possibility to do DNA tests while he was alive. So, it's a moot point. I'm doing this the old-fashioned way. Paper trail. But, I most certainly could use some help.

Sorry I haven't yet posted the land records. I was busy trying to hunt down ones from the Kentucky Territory, that someone posted online, to verify them before I posted anything. Nothing I can find on it. The family allegedly stayed in Kentucky for about two years before they continued on up to Illinois. The Massachusetts line is also a line I am exploring. Mostly because the birth year was so close to the Find-A-Grave one. Some suggest he was born in Iredell, NC. Can't find any trace there, beyond the marriage records which include the Bond and the registry of marriage. So, at least I know the family is correct given on the F-A-G. I'm totally at a loss and have been for a couple of years. Waving the white flag here.

Sometimes a dead end needs to stay that way until more evidence emerges. At least you’re good on his descendants, and have eliminated a wrong ancestry. That’s a lot.

Thank you for that, Erica Howton, I've been dealing with my Brick Walls, lately. The Josephs in my family (of which I have at least three that simply are NOT cooperating) has me a bit down. Joseph Friend, Joseph Hawkins and Joseph Arnett. I just want to crack one of them. But, I may have to take a break for now, before I reach burn-out.

I just posted one Illinois land purchase for this Joseph. As for how a Swedish girl would get interested in a man from Illinois, first off I'm betting he's the Swede. Plus, he married Elon Ellender Mathieson in Surry County, North Carolina. Most of their children were born there before they decided to travel north. As for any links, Ancestry DNA just revised my ethnicity as they are wont to do as more information comes in. I now have 8% Sweden and Denmark in me. That's up from 2%. I need to be careful, I'm feeling a tad renewed!
