It seems clear now, that two entirely different people have been conflated together.

A man named Thomas Philips, aged 74, died of paralysis at Sorell St, George Town. He was a builder, the youngest son of William Phillips [also a buildre] of Brighton, England. [So he was born Phillps, NOT Jackson]. His wife was Jane, and his children Thomas George Phillips, William Phillips, Henry Phillips, Harriett Phillips & Anna Phillips. He is buried with his wife and daughter. [from death certificate, death notice, headstone]

So the death and surname given in this profile belong to a different person.

Our man was a convict, then a farmer. His name was Thomas Phillip Jackson. His wife was Ann [nee Campbell also Alderson]. They had 4 known children; a son not named in his birth registration, Frances Jackson, William Jackson & Mary Ann Jackson. All children had father Thomas Jackson and mother Ann Campbell.
No likely death has been found for Thomas or Ann as yet, but clearly Thomas is not the Mr Phillips above & Ann is not Jane. Their children are not the same.

The one oddity is that Frances Jackson does marry, at the home of her half sister Sarah Jane Blizzard using the surname "Phillips". However, she was noted as companion to her sister, so at 16 had left home. She may have been marrying without parental permission & gave a false name. She later bore 2 children well after the death of her husband, yet registered them as his children, having travelled out of area to do so. She can be shown to be prepared to give false information when helpful to her [not that I judge her for either].

So, there is no evidence that I am aware of to show that Thomas Philip Jackson ever used an alias & the death assigned to him belongs to another man. Can his name be changed back to Jackson & the death and burial that belong to another man be removed?

I did send a message to the profile managers but have not had a response.

From Jenny

P.S. My connection is the Borradale family that daughter Frances married into. Sadly for her, her husband hung himself, leaving her with young children.

There is a lot of evidence that the family used PHILLIPS as a surname

His daughter Frances married in 1873 as Frances PHILLIPS

His son Thomas married in 1876 as Thomas PHILLIPS

His son William Married in 1882 as William PHILLIPS

When his daughter Mary married - her witness was her brother William PHILLIPS

His widow Ann died in 1890 as Ann PHILLIPS wife of Thomas George PHILLIPS, informant son William PHILLIPS,

I will add sources to the profiles and review what has already been added

I have had a look at the timeline

Up to 1860 they used the name JACKSON

  • 1836 transportation - Thomas Philip JACKSON
  • 1853 Thomas Phillips JACKSON marries Ann ALDERSON
  • 1854 unnamed male JACKSON born to Thomas Phillips JACKSON and Ann PHILLIPS
  • 1856 Frances JACKSON born to Thomas Phillips JACKSON and Ann CAMPBELL
  • 1857 William JACKSON born to Thomas Phillips JACKSON and Ann CAMPBELL
  • 1860 Mary Ann JACKSON born to Thomas Phillips JACKSON and Ann CAMPBELL

Sometime between 1860 and 1872 they start to use the name PHILLIPS

  • 1872 Frances PHILLIPS married Thomas BORRADALE - witness her sister Sarah Jane BLIZZARD
  • 1876 Thomas PHILLLIPS marries Charlotte ANTHONY - witness his brother William PHILLIPS and his sister Fanny BORRODALE
  • 1880 Mary PHLLIPS married John FERGUSON - witness her brother William David PHILLIPS
  • 1882 William David PHILLIPS married Emma Sophia ROBINSON - no family as witnesses
  • 1883 Thomas PHILLIPS dies aged 74 - informant son Thomas PHILLIPS
  • 1890 Ann PHILLIPS dies aged 61 - widow of Thomas George PHILLIPS - informant son W D PHILLIPS

I have removed his death date as that matches to Thomas PHILLIPS husband of Jane

Interesting; good detective work to find the other children's marriages. None of the deaths for Thomas Jackson or Thomas Philips seems to be a good match for him.
Do you know where the Cheshire birthplace comes from? 1818/1817 seems correct, assuming he was 35 at hus marriage in 1853.
I wonder if the change of name was to distant themselves from the convict beginnings.

I deleted a baptism record that was 10 years prior to his birthdate.

I think the birthplace was added from that. I have the deleted the birth place. I can't see any reference to a birth location.

All of his records had his name as Thomas Phillip Jackson which is rather unusual for that timeperiod - ie often they will usually drop off the middle name.

One of the convict images gave me the impression that he was Thomas Jackson aka Thomas Phillips. So perhaps he was illegitimate and his mother was one and his father the other or his mother remarried.

His trial details might assist.

He was deceased before 1890 as Ann was described as his widow when she died.
