The name Combs emerged as a given name with my grandfather, Combs Fort (1880-1938) in or around Springfield, Tennessee. The story goes that he was given the name Combs because his father (Eppa Lawson Fort 1858-1935) was taken ill on a trip (typhoid?) and was nursed back to health by a family named Combs. In gratitude he named his only son Combs.
The name was passed on to my uncle (Combs Lawson Fort) and to his son, my first cousin, both of whom are deceased.
Does this ring any bells?
