1st wife of James R. Randolph

The name of James R. Randolph’s (d 1797) first wife is not known with certainty.

The children of James R. Randolph shown here are based upon his will: John Randolph, Nimrod Randolph, Rebecca Randolph, Jeremiah Randolph, Robert Randolph, William Randolph, and James Randolph. As the testator refers to John Randolph and Nimrod Randolph as his younger children, it is assumed they are by his final wife, Mary Dye. Robert Randolph, William Randolph are referred to as older, and James Randolph is appointed as one of the executors of the will. Thus, they are ascribed to a wife earlier than Mary Dye. Rebecca Randolph is assumed to be one of the older children because she is the wife of co-executor William Dye.

If James R. Randolph was married to Jane Barnes, the marriage apparently took place after 4 February 1765 when she was referred to by her maiden name. This suggests that James R. Randolph had a wife (or wives) before Jane Barnes, if, indeed, Jane Barnes was his wife.

James Randolph (Randel)'s name on petiton list to divide Orange Co, 1774. He buy's land on Country Line Creek, 1777. He may have already been married to his first wife. They had children: James Jr, Abraham, Robert, Betsy (Elizabeth). His first wife either divorced him or died, possibly in Caswell Co. In 1781, he married Mary Dye, this marriage and children are well documented. Some researchers have stated, without proof, that his first wife was a Graves, others have said she was a Smelley. I don't believe this is true. Most likely she died in Caswell Co, but no trace of her death in any of the records have been found. No trace of her name.
