Family

Thomas Carter, son of Edward Carter and Elizabeth Thornton, was born 1 Feb 1700 at Petsworth Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia, and died 3 December 1776 at Christ Church Parish, Lancaster County, Virginia.

He was married 3 times:

1. after 1729 to an unknown woman. 4-5 children.
2. about 1735 to Sarah Haynie (d. 1749). 7 children.
3. 15 January 1750/1 to Anne Wale, widow of Thomas Hunton. 2 children.

Thomas Carter had issue by his first wife six sons and six daughters. [sic: children born before 1635)

1. Thomas Carter, living in Lancaster in 1785
2. John Carter, died in Lancaster in 1782
3. Edward Carter, died in Lancaster in 1781
4. Mary Carter, married a Mr. Chilton prior to 1776
5. James Carter, probably a cripple as he was left ot the care of his brother Edward for the remainder of his life.

2nd wife

1. Judith Carter, married a Mr. Chilton prior to 1776
2. Raleigh Carter, youngest son, died in Nottoway between 1815 and 1820
3. Lucy Carter, married a John Smithers, Nov. 11, 1761, died prior to 1776.
4. William Carter
5. Millicent Carter, married Rev. Chas. Cummings Feb 13, 1766
6. George Carter, died in Halifax about 1785-86
7. Sarah Carter, married a Mr. McTyre prior to 1776
