About 1st wife of Thomas Pitman

http://sites.rootsweb.com/~vaschsm/PitmanT.rtf

This well-sourced document says that Thomas who was son of Thomas I and wife Frances was born 1636 in England. He had one wife whose name is unknown and later married Lydia, the widow of Samuel Judkins. This Thomas Pitman's son named Thomas born c. 1658 was from the first wife whose name is unknown.

Thomas Pittman (son of Thomas Pitman & Frances) married twice. The name of his first wife is not known. She died by 1672.

His second wife was the Lydia Judkins, the relict of Samuel Judkins. Through this union, he took on two step-sons: Samuel, Charles, and Robert Judkins. At the time of her marriage to Thomas at least Charles was a minor; Thomas was put in charge of Charles' inheritance, a responsibility he gave up a few years later to the eldest brother Samuel.

2. THOMAS2 PITMAN (Thomas1) was probably born in England about 1636. He died in Surry County probably by 1692 when he disappears from the tax records.

He married

  • (1) UNKNOWN in Surry County about 1656, who died in Surry County by 1672
  • (2) LYDIA (---) the relict of Samuel Judkins in Surry County before 10 Sep 1672.Lydia was dead in Surry County by 14 Mar 1678.[sic: Lydia Gray]

Thomas2 Pitman was very poor. As early as 2 Nov 1675, he was under the care of the Parish because of his meager circumstances. It is not clear what form of welfare he received from the Parish or what he had to do to qualify.

Thomas Pitman’s death is not recorded, but there are some clues. As a lieutenant in the militia, he is called one of the living officials of Surry County on 3 Jan 1687. He is the Thomas Pitman who receives the designation of “to ye Pish” or under the care of the parish in 1686 in the records. This phrase attached to a Thomas Pitman is last used in the tax records in 1691 (see Attachment I). Therefore it is likely that he died in late 1691 or early 1692.

Children of Thomas Pitman by his unknown first wife were:

  • 7. i. THOMAS3 PITMAN, b. in Surry County about 1658, m. (1) UNKNOWN in Surry County, (2) MARY CHAMBERS in Surry County about 1706, and (3) Elizabeth (---) before 23 Sep 1714, d. probably in Surry County between 1714 and 1724.
  • 8. ii. WILLIAM PITMAN, b. in Surry County about 1661, m. ELIZABETH (---) in Surry County, and d. in Surry County after 1724.

Stepchildren of Thomas Pitman, born of his second wife, Lydia (---), by her first husband Samuel Judkins were:

  • 9. ROBERT1 JUDKINS, b. about 1650, m. ELIZABETH (---) in Surry County about 1680, and d. in Surry County after 19 May 1693.
  • 10. SAMUEL JUDKINS, b. about 1658, m. ELIZABETH PETWAY in Surry County, and d. in Surry County before 18 May 1705.
  • 11. CHARLES JUDKINS, b. in Surry County about 1670, m. JANE (---) in Surry County about 1691, and d. in Surry County after 13 Mar 1709/1710.
