aka Abraham leLong/LeLon
Baptized June 28, 1668 near Ludwigshafen, Pfalz (Palatinate) see map for "Lu". ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Following from long time DeLong surname researcher, the late John D. Baldwin III:
ABRAHAM (5) The founder of the German DeLong family of Pennsylvania was almost certainly who arrived in New York with one of the earliest parties of Palatine Germans. In turn he was very possibly the ABRAHAM leLONG/LeLON of the vicinity of Ludwigshafen, Pfalz (Palatinate). Information below is from Henry J. Jones Jr's "Palatine Families of New York", p. 519. I suggested to Mr. Jones that Abraham's son Peter could be the Peter DeLong (5-1) who settled in Berks County, PA; Mr. Jones concurred with the suggestion, publishing it in his companion volume More Palatine Families ... etc.
1668 - Abraham, son of CHARLES leLONG and wife Marie des Marets was baptised 28 Jun 1668, per records of the Walloon Church at Frankenthal, Pfalz, 7km north of Ludwigshafen (churchbooks begin 1622). Sponsors (translated from French) were Jean de Marets - "Gautier" (headman? I am unsure) at Manheim, Jean des Marets the younger living in this village, Sarah Bonnet wife of the said Gautier at Manheim, and Georgine le long, young maiden. I suggest that Jean de Marets and Sarah Bonnet were parents of Marie and Jean Jr., and that Georgine was sister of Charles. (Jones' transcript shows des Marets twice, de Marets once.)
1698 - ABRAHAM Le LON and Anna Barbara Dorthel 2 Dec 1698 per records of the Reformed Church (begin 1698) of Oggersheim, four kilometers South of Ludwigshafen.
1699 - Peter son of Abraham le Long was born at Hemshof per records of the Oggersheim Reformed Church. Apparently died young.
1707 - Another Peter was born at Friesenheim, son of Abraham le lonn, commoner of Friesenheim, baptised 25 April 1707, again Oggersheim church records.
Likely, the des Marets and possibly Charles leLong were from Wallonia, the French-speaking province of Southern Belgium. I do not know whether Dorthel is a German name or a Germanized French name, nor whether Oggersheim Church was French or German.
It would be interesting to study the earlier Frankenthal Walloon Churchbook from 1622 to 1698 for the three surnames.
- Now turning to the emigrant to New York, possibly the man discussed above:
170_ - If Jones correctly identifies Abraham of Oggersheim as the immigrant, he likely married second in the Palatinate as his wife soon after arrival in NY was Maria Catherina.
1709? 1710? - Abm Lang and wife and three children were on Capt. John Unyank's ship in Holland (near a Johan Lang and wife) in the fifth party of Palatines (Rotterdam lists)
It seems impossible to identify members of the household as listed in the Hunter lists over the next few years. Note there were three children leaving Rotterdam, yet on 30 June 1710, the household consisted of only three persons, two over 10 (the parents), and one under 10 (Peter of 1707 if we have identified properly with the above leLon family). On 4 Oct 1710, there were five over 10 and one under, so the house had been joined by three adults or older children. The older category had dropped to four by 24 June 1711, while there was a second child under 10, so perhaps a son Abraham had been born (see below). By 25 Mar 1712, the older category was down to three, two younger children remained.
The entry for 24 June shows five persons above ten. Though apparently no young children are indicated, the household composition shows such list-to-list variation that I do not consider this reason for thinking this was not the home for Peter of 1707 and a brother Abraham.
The Palatine parties settled initially in Ulster County, NY and I assume the various locations below are in that area but have not checked them.
1711 - Abraham Langen soldier from Haysbury (Palatine Vols. To Canada)
1711 - Maria Catherina, wife of Abraham Lang was sponsor at West Camp for Abraham Lauck. In 1716-7 Abraham and Anna Maria [presumably Anna Maria Catherina] were listed next to Michael, actually Nicholas, Laux on the Simmendinger Register and H. Jones believes this second wife was related to that family.
ca 1716-7 - Abraham Lang and Anna Maria with four children at Hessburg next to Nicholas Laux, see 1711.
1718, 1719, 1721, 1722 - Abraham Langh was a Palatine debtor (Livingston lists).
Child of Abraham and Anna Barbara (Dorthel):
Nothing supports the DAR claim that Peter was son of Francis DeLong which presumably came from a misreading of History of Lehigh Co., PA Vol 2 which correctly says that Peter had lived in Ulster Co., NY, then mentions Francis DeLong of that place in 1711, who however was of the much earlier Dutch DeLong family.
Child of Abraham, possibly by Anna Maria Catherina (Laucks?):
WFT Vol. 10:4606 suggests name as Jacob Jansen Delange b. Holland. with note that Jacob came to America in 1662.
WFT Vol 14:791 suggests name of Abraham Langer (w/alias of Abraham Le Long) b. bef 1710 w/spouse Anna Barbara Dorthel m. 1698.
