Adam Shipley was born circa 1650 in Yorke, Yorkshire County, England and died in 1698 at Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

Killed by the Indians

in 1698 while returning from a visit with some of his relatives in Virginia. He left six children under legal age and his eldest son Richard Shipley was heir at law by the English custom of primogeniture. After the death of their father, the children of Adam received shares of his land from their brother Richard. They moved to Queen Caroline Parish in what is now Howard County, MD, where their names and those of their familes are to be found on the Christ Church Register.

There is a sign placed by the Maryland Historical Society along the road which reads "Shipley's Choice" : Adam Shipley, who came to Anne Arundel County in in 1668, on March 30, 1681, patented 200 acres on the south side of the Severn River, dedicated during the tercentenary commemoration of the SHIPlLEY'S of Maryland May 25, 1968.

Brief Biography

It was at this time that Adam Shipley (1645-50 - 1696) came to America. Adam was the son of Hugh Shipley, a 'Gentelman' grantee of 2d charter of the Virginia Company, 1609. He arrived in Providence, Maryland from Yorkshire, England in February of 1668. Adam was transported with nine young men by John Pawson, a merchant from Yorke, England. The other men were Christopher Shawn, John Browne, John Fish, Thomas Mason, William Barton, Richard Flint, Richard Pattereson, Thomas Wood and John Dixon. Adam Shipley 'performed his time or service' (probably an apprenticeship) to pay for his transportation, and by 1675 had received the 'fifty acres of land due him' under the incentive plan. He then settled down to the serious business of acquiring land. By 1687 he had acquired 1,000 acres of land. Adam married Lois Howard (1655 - 1725) in 1676 and they settled in Anne Arundel County. Adam Shipley came from England and settled in Maryland when this state was a wilderness. Adam Shipley settled in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, In 1668. He obtained in an honorable way much real estate. His choice of a residence was not in a town but on his farm known as "Howard's and Porter's Range" on the south side of the Severn River. His wife was named Lois possible last name of Howard. To Adam and Lois Shipley were born six children, four sons and two daughters. Adam Shipley died while a young man, leaving six children all under legal age, in or about the year 1696, and leaving his eldest son Richard heir at law by the old English custom of primogeniture.

From "Shipley's of Maryland": Adam Shipley's wife was named LOIS but there is no definitive proof as to her family name. It is believed that she was LOIS HOWARD whose family lived on HOWARD ANS PORTER'S RANGE on the south side of the Severn River, which was transferred to Adam Shipley.

To Adam and Lois Shipley were born SIX children, whose names are verified by legal documents. There is a tradition that there were oter children, but all evidence of this is lacking. Adam died in 1698. He left six children under legal age and his eldest son RICHARD was heir by law by the English custom of primogeniture.

Who claimed 500 acres of land for transporting Christopher Shawn, John Browne, ADAM SHIPLEY, John Fish, Thomas Mason, William Barton, Richard Flint, Richard Patterson, Thomas Wood, and John Dixon to Maryland.

Seven years after his arrival, By January 10, 1675, Adam had completed his indenture and was Granted his mandatory 50 acres of land in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. On which he planted tobacco.

Adam Shipley married Lois in 1676. Her family background is unknown. Some believe she was Lois Howard, The daughter of Cornelius Howard since the Howard family-owned "Howard's and Porter's Range" before it was sold to Adam in 1679 by Cornelius Howard. Although there is no evidence that Lois was a Howard, And it is highly unlikely that she was because she would be the only child not mentioned in Cornelius' will.

On April 5, 1679, He parlayed 4000 lbs. of tobacco into an additional 500 acres called "Howard's and Porter's range" along the south side of the Severn River. Which was owned by Cornelius Howard & Peter Porter at the time. On March 30, 1681, He acquired 200 acres of "Shipley's choice" on the south side of the Severn River. In 1687, He acquired another 500 acres called "Adam the First" on Elk Ridge, In what is now Howard County, Maryland. By his death, Adam Shipley owned more than 1000 acres of land in four counties of Maryland: Anne Arundel, Howard, Carrol, and Baltimore.

Adam Shipley was killed by Native Americans on August 9, 1696, While in Virginia. After the death of his father, Richard Shipley, Adam's eldest son inherited his land. After his siblings were of legal age, he shared the land between them.

The name "Shipley" is believed to be Anglo-Saxon because there are many places in England that bear the name Shipley such as hills, valleys, and villages. it is also recorded in the Domesday Book.
