About Agnes Trudeau
Agnes Trudeau is #1443 on the 1907 Wooster Roll. Her traditional name is reported as "Madjianokwe" meaning "Beginning wind woman". This is a very curious translation since the Anishinaabemowin word for wind in "nodin". However the beginning of the word appears to stem from the word "Madji" which, in connection with a verb, signifies beginning or going on. Possible associations are "first born" or "send away" (as was done to children sent to residentail school away from their home community). The translation requires careful consideration by those with epertise in the Anishinaabemowin language and Poyawatomi culture and history. In 1907 when Agnes was age 22 the Wooster Roll reports her residence as Manitoulin Island but does not record the community on Manitoulin Island where she lived.
