Alexander Peter is the son of Thomas Peter of Crossbasket, senior [National Archives of Scotland, Register House, Edinburgh, Commissarriot Records of Glasgow, Register of Testaments, The Testament Dative of Thomas Peter of Crossbasket, senior, registered at Glasgow on 14 February 1775, reference CC9/7/69 pages 640-44].

Birth and Baptism

Alexander Peter is the son of Thomas Peter of Crossbasket (1703-73), merchant, burgess and guild brother of Glasgow. He is the twin brother of Robert Peter. He and his brother were probably born at Cardarroch in Cadder parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland, for their baptism was registered at Cadder on 22 August 1726 Cadder Baptismal RecordsThe baptismal record reads as follow: "Robert and Alexander twin sons lawll to Thomas Peters of Corsebasket baptized witneses thereof James Dunlop of Garnkirk John Bryce elder port of Lumloch and Mr David Ewing who baptized them" [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh, Cadder Baptisms, 1662-1744, reference OPR.626/1].

Tacksman of Cardarroch, 1770-74

Thomas Peter of Crossbasket and Cardarroch gave his son Alexander a tack for parts of his four pound lands of Cardarroch. The tack, which is reported to have been signed on 29 September 1770, included the following parts and portions of the estate: "The Mansion House of Cardarroch with the gardens and offices As also the farm and grounds and pertinents there in the natural possession of the said Thomas Peter as well not set in tenantry as reserved from the tenants tacks and with the exclusive right and priviledge of the lime and stone quarries and of winning and carrying away lime and stones in and from any part of the said lands of Cardarroch And of casting peats feal turf and divot on any part of the said lands in like manner as the said Thomas Peter could do himself As also the liberty and priviledge of the said Thomas Peter’s seats in the Kirk of Cadder And Meeting house of Auchinloch As also the kain fowls and services of working at hay leading coals shearing and others due and prestable by the tenants of Cardarroch to the said Thomas Peter As also the whole coal houses and yards in Cardyke then possessed by Robert Miller William Scorgick Agnes and Helen Stevens, James McLean and John Pollock and three acres of land or thereby and grass for two cows and one follower possest by the said Robert Miller And an acre of land or thereby and a cows grass possest by the said John Pollock And a cows grass possest by the said James McLean And that for the term of nineteen years and crops from Martinmas seventeen hundred and seventy years as to the arable lands and services And from Whitsunday seventeen hundred and seventy one years as to the houses yards and pasturage Excepting and reserving from the said tack to the said pursuer during her life after her said husband’s death the said Mansion house and the garden on the south thereof within the dyke and the planted inclosure called the Easter yard and that part called Croftallan And an ale cellar adjoining to the said Mansion house a byre or stable called the old dovecot then used for keeping young cattle on the East end of the large byre the priviledge of the brew house and well in common with the said defender or his forsaids And also the said kain fowls and the said servitude of leading coals by the other tenants And also excepting to the pursuer and family during her life the priviledge of the said seats in the Kirk of Cadder and the Meeting house at Auchinloch" [National Archives of Scotland, H.M. Alexander Peter was the principal baptismal sponsor for Alexander Peter MacDowall, the son of James MacDowall and Isabel Peter, whose baptism was registered at Glasgow on 13 November 1777.

Death

Alexander Peter died of old age on 21 April 1806. He was buried in the Ramshorn Churchyard in Glasgow, on 23 April 1806, in the lair belonging to Thomas Peter [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh, Blackfriars & Ramshorn (Glasgow) Deaths, 1788-1808, reference OPR.644/60].

Alexander Peter may have married twice. He married Margaret Bogle in 1767 but the possibility of an earlier marriage is suggested by the death record of "Lillie Petters daughter of Alexander Petters Merchant" who died in August 1762 age one [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh, Glasgow Deaths, 1757-68, reference OPR.644/48].

Second Marriage

Margaret Bogle gives up the inventary of her deceased husband's moveable estate

Margaret Bogle, together with General Thomas Peter of Crossbasket, Robert Graham, and James Hill, these last two writers in Glasgow, gave up the inventory of her deceased husband's moveable estate, at Glasgow on 21 August 1806. They were the surviving trustees appointed by Alexander Peter in his last will and testament dated 6 September 1803. The inventory was valued at fifteen pounds Sterling of monies owed to him, made up as follows: (1) "five pounds Sterlg part of the sum of two thousand five hundred pounds Str contained in a bond granted bt the Magistrates and Town Council of Glasgow to the said deceased Alexander Peter" (2) "Item the sum of five pounds Sterlg part of the sum of nine hundred & twenty two pounds seventeen shillings & four pence halfpenny belonging to the defunct in the branch of the Royal Bank at Glasgow" and (3) "The sum of five pounds Stg part of the sum of two hundred pounds in the Bank of Messrs Carrick Brown & Company Bankers in Glasgow which also belonged to the defunct". Children

Alexander Peter, merchant in Glasgow, appears to have had two children: (1) He had a daughter named Lillie Peter, who died in August 1762. The name of her mother is not known but there seems hardly an doubt about the identity of her father (2) He and his wife, Margaret Bogle, had a daughter named Isobel Dunlop Peter.
