To be extra clear:
It's now believed that
Walter Chiles, I, of Bristol & Jamestown, the immigrant ancestor, was the son of John Chiles, of Crowle & Bristol & his wife Alice (Wellstedd) Chiles.
This corrects older sources, including the Dictionary of Virginia Biography, who describe Walter Chiles of Jamestown:
Chiles was probably the son of Walter Chiles (also Childs or Childes) and was born in Bristol, England, where his father was a textile merchant. His mother's name is uncertain. Baptized in the church of Saint Mary Redcliffe, in Bristol, on March 20, 1609.
This is wrong. He was the son of John Childs, later known as Chiles, a "sherman" of Bristol, born in Crowle, Worcestershire.
