biography

Alice Squire was the daughter of Sir Oliver Squire (Squier/Squyer) of Southby, Hampshire (c.1480-c.1505). Her mother is sometimes given as Margaret Myrrffun. Alice married three times. Her first husband was John Brigandine (Bryganten, Brykynden, or Brockenden) of Southampton, by whom she had a daughter, Alice (x. March 14,1551) and a son, John (d.1563+). Her second husband was Edward Mirfyn of London (d.1528), by whom she had no children (sic: they had a son Edward) Thirdly, she married Edward North (1496-December 31, 1564). They had four children, Christiana (c.1529-March 20, 1563/4), Roger (February 27, 1530-December 3, 1600), Thomas (1535-June 1601), and Mary (c.1538-November 1558). It was through Alice's third husband that her daughter from her first marriage met her future husband, Thomas Arden of Faversham, Kent. On February 15, 1551, Arden was murdered and Alice was found guilty of plotting the crime. She was tried and found guilty and burnt to death in Canterbury. In spite of the notoriety, Edward North was created Baron North of Kirtling in 1554 and as Lady North, Alice was often at court during the last year of her life. She was buried on August 22, 1560.

To be buried at the charnel house in Paul's churchyard, where lye the bodies of Thomas and Alice, my father and mother, and £$ to go to repairs of the chapel.

Bequests to churches of St. Andrew-Undershaft London, and I lornchurch in parish of Havering, co. Essex. Legacies to divers servants.

To Alice Brygandyn my wife's daughter, £20 at full age or marriage, and to Agnes, another of my said wife's daughters, £6 13. 4. to her marriage, and to John Brygandyn, my wife's son, 5 marks.

To Pargi-icr and his wife and child, money and wearing apparel. To Richard Southwood, wearing apparel, bedding, &°.

To my wife Alice my manor of Burtyns, in the town of Frecknam, co. Suffolk, for life; remainder to the child she now goeth with; but if said child die before coming to full age, then the said manor to go to Alice Brygandyn, my wife's daughter.

To my brother in law, Andrew Judde, a furred gown and 5 marks, and to my sister his wife a ring of 40 To Richard Bury my jackett of black velvet. Residue to my wife and the child she now goeth with, and my wife to be Executrix. My brother in law Andrew Judde, and Richard Bury, gentleman, to be overseers.
