In 1193, Alfonso married Gersenda II of Sabran, daughter of Rainou, Count of Forcalquier and Gersend of Forcalquier. They had a child who became Ramon Berenguer IV as count of Provence.

According to explanations in the manuscripts of Gaucelm Faidit's poems, Alfonso was a rival of the troubadour's for the love of Jourdaine d'Embrun.[1]

Alfonso II died in Palermo, Sicily, Italy.

Alfonso II (Aragon) or Alfons I (Provence and Barcelona) (Huesca, 1157 – Perpignan, 25 April 1196), called the Chaste or the Troubadour, was the King of Aragon and Count of Barcelona from 1162 until his death. He was the son of Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona and Petronilla of Aragon and the first King of Aragon who was also Count of Barcelona.

Leben [Bearbeiten]

Alfons war ein Sohn des Königs Alfons II. von Aragón und dessen Gemahlin Sancha von Kastilien, sowie ein jüngerer Bruder des aragonesischen Königs Peter II.

Er wurde von seinem Vater 1185 zum Mitgraf der Provence erhoben und regierte dabei zusammen mit seinen Onkeln Raimund Berengar und Sancho. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters regierte er ab 1196 allein.

Den Manuskripten des Troubadours Gaucelm Faidit zufolge, soll er ein Rivale um die Liebe der Jourdaine d'Embrun gewesen sein.

Ehe und Nachkommen [Bearbeiten]

Alfons heiratete 1193 in Aix-en-Provence Gersende, Gräfin und Erbin von Forcalquier (1180–1218), Tochter des Raimund I. de Sabran, Sire de Caylar und seiner Frau Gersende, Gräfin de Forcalquier. Mit seiner Gemahlin hatte Alfons zwei Kinder:
