Américo Gomes Ribeiro da Luz

Américo Gomes Ribeiro da Luz nasceu em Campanha no ano de 1854 e formou-se em Medicina em 1880. Chegou a Muzambinho em 1881, onde passou a exercer a profissão e atuar politicamente, principalmente, pelas causas abolicionistas. Américo Luz não era um aventureiro da causa abolicionista. O mesmo atuou para proteger negros fugidos dos seus senhores. No campo político, exerceu o cargo de presidente da Câmara Municipal de Muzambinho e foi deputado provincial. Suas atuações em prol da causa abolicionista renderam-lhe simpatizantes e inimigos, tanto que em 1888 sofreu uma tentativa de atentado liderado por fazendeiros e capangas da região, os quais o acusavam de proteger escravos fugidos. Em 1889 fundou a Cia. Estrada de Ferro Muzambinho que dirigiu até 1908, quando foi incorporada pela Rede Sul-Mineira. De 1913 a 1927 ocupou a presidência do Banco de Crédito Real de Minas Gerais S.A.

Américo Luz, ainda foi jornalista e membro de várias associações científicas com trabalhos em medicina, economia e finanças. Trabalhou na lavoura e na indústria. Pertenceu ao Partido Liberal, na Monarquia, e ao PRM, na República. Américo Luz faleceu a 17 de novembro de 1927, em Juiz de Fora.

Américo Gomes Ribeiro da Luz was born in Campanha in the year 1854 and graduated in Medicine in 1880. He arrived in Muzambinho in 1881, where he started to exercise his profession and act politically, mainly for abolitionist causes. Américo Luz was not an adventurer of the abolitionist cause. The same acted to protect blacks who had fled from their masters. In the political field, he held the position of president of the Municipal Chamber of Muzambinho and was a provincial deputy. His actions in favor of the abolitionist cause brought him sympathizers and enemies, so much so that in 1888 he underwent an attempted attack led by farmers and henchmen in the region, who accused him of protecting runaway slaves. In 1889 he founded the Cia. Estrada de Ferro Muzambinho which he ran until 1908, when it was incorporated by Rede Sul-Mineira. From 1913 to 1927 he held the presidency of Banco de Crédito Real de Minas Gerais S.A.

Américo Luz, was also a journalist and member of several scientific associations working in medicine, economics and finance. He worked in the fields and in the industry. He belonged to the Liberal Party, in the Monarchy, and to the PRM, in the Republic. Américo Luz died on November 17, 1927, in Juiz de Fora.
