Notes for Amos Upton: General Notes: Amos Upton's will was dated May 24, 1780, and proved October 3, 1781. An inventory of his estate and the terms of his will are printed in The Upton Memorial. The book also contains a print showing "The Mansion of Deacon Amos Upton at North Reading, now owned and occupied by his great-grandson, Charles A. Upton". The house would not appear to be the same as the Amos Upton house that still stands on Upton Avenue in North Reading. That house was built in 1702, 15 years before this Amos Upton was born, and is of a slightly different style than the present structure. However, The Upton Memorial states the this Amos resided in a house "which is now in a town called North Reading, about a mile north-east of the present meetinghouse, in a house yet standing, and in good condition." Vinton is almost certainly referring to the North Reading 3rd Meeting House, which now stands on a hill behind the North Reading War Memorial, about a mile from Upton Avenue and the Amos Upton house marked as being built in 1702.

While I have no direct proof of a connection, I assume that the Amos Upton, Jr. listed on the Revolutionary War plaque at the North Reading War Memorial is this Amos Upton, Jr.. The reason for my presumption is that the plaque lists Amos Upton, Amos Upton, Jr., and Amos Upton III, and this branch of the family is the ony one I am aware that has three consecutive Amos Uptons. However, Amos Upton III was born in 1776, so he could not have served in the Revolutionary War. Also, previous Upton histories state that this Amos served as a Captain in the American Revolution.
