Ann Elizabeth Boykin

From Email: Documentary evidence indicates Ann Gwaltney was born no earlier than 1690,

and no later than 1692.

1. Will of William Gwaltney, Surry County, Virginia, Book 8, page 257 [Eliza T. Davis,

"Surry County, Virginia Wills 1671-1750" (1980), page 63] as follows: Dau Ruth, wife of

Robert Petway. Son William. Son John. Grandson Thomas. Two daus Mary and

Martha. Grandson Edward Boykin. Dated 20 Mar 1728. Prob. 2 Apr 1732.

2. William Gwaltney married Alice Flake, as proved by the will of Robert

Flake Jr in Surry County, Virginia, Book 7, page 528 [same source as above, page 51],

"Appoints son-in-law William Gwaltney, Exer. 18 Aug 1722; 15 Apr 1724"

Robert's wife was named Margaret in a deed of 26 Oct 1702 in William Lindsay

Hopkins, "Surry County, Virginia, Deeds 1684-1733 and Other Court Papers" (1991), page

61.

3. Robert Flake Jr married Margaret Marriott, daughter of Mathias Marriott

and wife Alice, in Surry County, Virginia Wills, Book 5, page 374 [same source as

above], "to daughter Margaret Flake."

4. A number of records show Mathias Marriott was married to Alice, daughter

of Thomas Warren. In 1677 she gave a deposition stating her then age as 32,

which would make her born about 1645.

Given the time constraints, the above lineage figures as follows:

Alice Warren, born about 1645 = Mathias Marriott

Margaret Marriott, born about 1660 = Robert Flake Jr

Alice Flake, born about 1675 = William Gwaltney

daughter, probably Ann, Gwaltney, born about 1690 = someone named Boykin and had

a son named Edward.

Placement of grandson Edward Boykin mentioned in the will of William

Gwaltney in the correct generation is the key to the entire genealogy. I

believe John Bennett Boddie et Alabama have all just assumed she was married to

Edward Boykin Sr, born 1650, without looking further.

Thomas Warren, father of Alice, was from an ancient armorial family in

Ripple, Kent, England; his parents were William Warren and Katherine Gookin.

In 1991 Richard N. Gookins compiled an excellent, well sourced genealogy of

the Gookin family, and he attempted to document the Boykin line: he found

so much has been misstated he called the lineage almost irretrievably

muddied. He concluded the best bet for the Boykin-Gwaltney marriage was

Edward's son John Boykin. I agree.

John Boykin, son of Edward, died intestate in 1729 [Isle of Wight Wills],

and his estate was appraised by James Turner. Later in Bertie County, North Carolina, in

1739 James Turner and wife Ann of IOW County, Virginia, gave land to Francis Boykin

"for a valuable sum", "being in actual possession of Francis Boykin". There

is a suggestion here that John Boykin's wife was Ann and she remarried to a

James Turner, but this is NOT proof, only a lead to follow.

NO LATER THAN 1692

Francis Boykin died in Northampton County, North Carolina, in 1764 leaving children and

grandchildren from two wives. His oldest daughter Mary was born about

1725-26 and married about 1741-42 to Samuel DeLoach, since she had children

that married in the 1760's. And since Francis had a daughter born in

1725-26, he himself was probably born about 1705-1707.
