James Evans, Sr. was an early settler on the banks of Abbotts Creek. He was first granted land there in 1760 and began purchasing land adjoining his grant as it became available. He married Anna Younger, daughter of James and Anna Younger. He was a miller and farmer. Anna Younger Evans was a much loved and well respected mid-wife.
The Evans family were members of Abbotts Creek Baptist Meeting House. James Younger, father of Ann Evans, was preaching at Abbotts Creek in 1853 and was instrumental in the constituting of a church at Abbotts Creek. James Younger moved to Chatham County, NC in 1783.
The Abbotts Creek Baptist Meeting House is located on land purchased by Elijah Teague from William Buis and sold to James Evans in 1766. James Evans retained an interest in the Meeting House property until 1815 when he sold 6 1/2 acres to the church trustees. This included the Meeting House and the cemetery. Anna Younger Evans is buried in the lower cemetery at Abbotts,Creek. Although there is no stone to be found for James Evans, Sr., it is,impossible to believe he isn't buried there.
Their children:

- Rachel never married;
- Mary married Mr. Chadwick;
- Ruth married Mr. Odell;
- Elizabeth never married;
- Moses (1792-1864) married Barbara Low.
