Baldwin LOVEL of Chilcompton & Harptree
Baldwin Lovel, s. of Ralph, is known only by the pedigree produced in court in 1280 and later by his descendants.(a-200)
(a200) In 1280 his descendant Hugh (_Somerset Pleas_, Som. Rec. Soc., vol, iv. pt. 1, p. 148) put in a pedigree of successful owners (as he claimed) of Tintenhull, viz. Ralph—son Baldwin—son Ralph—sons Henry, Maurice (all s.p.) and Richard—sons William (s.p.) and Henry—sons Richard (s.p.) and Hugh, the plaintiff. He places the first Ralph in the time of the great-grandfather (Henry II) of the then King, but it should certainly have been Henry I, for charter evidence shows that the first Ralph associated with men of the entourage of Henry I. The claim to Tintenhull which Hugh was supporting was revived under Richar II (_De Banco Roll_, Mich. 22 Ric. II. rot. 349) by Hugh's descendant Richard de Seymour, who produced the same pedigree, except that he placed the first Ralph in the time of Henry III! [Ref: CP VIII:200]
