About Barnes Holloway, Sr.

Barnes Holloway Sr. (c. 1755–c. 1824) was the son of William Holloway Sr. and Frances Meador. He married Sarah Meador, his double first cousin. Sarah was the daughter of John Meador Sr. and Jane Holloway. Barnes and Sarah grew up as neighbors in Bedford County, where their parents owned properties on opposite sides of the Staunton River. Barnes and Sarah were married in Bedford County in 1780, and then Barnes appears briefly in records of Henry County through 1783. Barnes and Sarah seem to have lived on the Blackwater River and Poplar Camp Creek in Henry County, later formed into Franklin County. A number of cousins from the younger Holloway-Meador generation were their close neighbors on Blackwater River. Barnes and Sarah left Henry County in about 1784 and moved to Georgia. They owned property there in the part of Wilkes County that became Oglethorpe County, and in the part of Washington County that became Greene County. They left Greene County after Nov. 1805 and moved to Putnam Co., GA, where Barnes was a justice of the Putnam County Court. Barnes and Sarah then moved to Alabama, first to Madison County and then to Marion County.

On 2 Jun. 1779, Barnes Holloway was among those who filed account papers for the estate of William Dabney, deceased (Anny Dabney, administratrix). The estate paid accounts to Jesse Heard; James Finley, William Swanson, James Spencer, John Stewart, William Taylor, Jesse Dilling, Andrew Rea, Richard Peremon, Hickerson Grubbs, George Heard, William Haynes, Lewis Jenkins, John Hartwell, William Heard, and John Cox for various accounts and supplies. The payments totaled 1,185 pounds, 9 shillings, 0 pence. The estate received payments from Patrick Lockhart, James Harris, and others. The receipts totaled 3,230 pounds, 19 shillings, 7 pence. The estate papers were submitted to the court by James Cowden, George Heard, and Baines (Barnes) Holloway (Henry County Will Book 1, 1777 – 1799: 65; see Adams, Henry County Wills, vol. I & II, 9). This is the only time in period documents that Barnes Holloway was referred to as Baines. His nephew Barnes Holloway (son of Billy Jr.) was referred to as Bains Holloway in 1813, when purchasing the property of his uncle, Joseph Holloway (Blount Co., TN Deed Book 3: 116–17; see Thomas, Blount County Deeds, 1819 – 1833, 148–49).

On 25 Oct. 1781, "James Cowden, William Cowden, Barns Holloway and
George Hurd are appointed to settle the account of Anny Dabney, Administratrix of the Estate of William Dabney, deceased, and make a report" (Blunt, Henry County Order Book #1 and #2, 1777 – 1782: 156).

On 22 May 1783, Stephen Heard sold his claim to the services of soldier Brient (Bryant) Trent to Daniel Peerman of Henry County, whom he named his attorney in this matter. The consideration was 40 pounds. Witnesses were James Mason and Barnes Holloway (Henry County Deed Book 2, 1780 – 1784: 338; see Adams, Henry County Deed Books I & II, 1776 – 1784: 115). Stephen Heard was the father-in-law of Barnes' first cousin Mary Meador Heard.
