About Benjamin Birkett
When the ship ‘Slains Castle’ arrived at Port Nicholson in Wellington on 25 January 1841 it brought Benjamin Birkett (aka Burkett), his wife and three children to a new life in Aotearoa New Zealand. Benjamin does not seem to have left his notorious life behind him however, as six years later he was serving time in Wellington Gaol with hard labour. Benjamin was my fourth great grandfather.
