Bernard Bugaret dit Saint-Martin, parents unknown, was born at Villefranche du Queyran en Gascogne. He was a carpenter and travelled between Acadie and New Rochelle a number of times but perhaps never settled in Acadie, though his daughter did.

Bernard married sometime before 1638, location unknown, to a woman whose name has yet to be discovered. They had a child, Catherine Bugaret, born about 1638 in Port-Royal, Acadie.

:On 15 Sep 1637, before the notary TEULERON at La Rochelle, France, Bernard BUGARET, a native of Villefrance du Queyran in Gascony, contracted with Nicolas DENYS, a ship captain, for his passage as well as for that of "ten men that he could bring with him to New France."
:On 24 Mar 1648, Bernard BUGARET, a resident of Mas in Agenois, contracted with Emmanuel LE BORGNE to leave once again for New France.
:In a 1716 publication by Jacques L'HERMITE called DESCRIPTION OF ILE ROYALE: "A man named Petitpas [is the] grandson of one named Bernard du Gueret [sic], dit St-Martin, a native of Bordeaux, who was settled at Mirliguèche, between La Hève and Chibouctou...by [order of] the gentlemen of the Company about eighty years ago; this harbour was given him by the King, and the papers were recorded in the registry of Canada."≤/ref>

DNA ===:DNA: A submitter to the Acadia--Métis Mothers mtDNA group at Family Tree DNA listed Catherine BUGARET as his earliest known ancestress in the female-only descent. His haplogroup was identified as U6a, with his difference from the Cambridge Reference Sequence of 16172C, 16219G, and 16278T. The company states: "Haplogroup U6 is among the oldest of the U haplogroups with an origin approximately 50,000 years ago. It isa rare, but ancient haplogroup... In modern populations, it is found at highest frequency in Berber-speaking populations of North Africa and the Canary Islands. Its presence in Portugal and Spain is the resultof recent admixture most likely related to the Moorish occupation of Iberia."
