THIRD GENERATION. As we have up record of marriage of eight of the eleven children of 1 John Marsh, oar list now narrows to the families of the children of 3 Zachary and 8 Bethiah (who each married a Sillsbee) and to the children of 9 Samuer. This makes it desirable that we give here some account of the Sillsbees. Henry Silsbee (now spelt Silsby) was born in London, England, probably in 1608. He came to Salem probably with Mr. Samuel Sharp in 1629, (and was known as Mr. Sharp's " man," that is, he was probably his confidential business man.) " 25th day of the 5 month, 1639, Henry Sillsby, Mr. Sharp's man, is received an inhabitant within this jurisdiction and their is granted to him half an acre of land near the Cat Cone for a howseplatt," this is the first appearance of the name in Salem records. On the ]!)th Oct., 1651, Henry Silsby of Ipswich, buys of Obediah Flud of Boston and Thomas Coates of Linn, the now dwelling house of Thomas Coates in Linn, once in the occupation of Joseph Flud ; with six THE SILSBEES. 21 acres of ground next the little river east and west upon Town Com- mon, south by Edward Jerson and North by Robert Rand." The little river is " Stacy's" Brook, which crosses the Eastern Railroad a short distance southwest of the Swampscott station. 16th March, 1670-1, Henry Silsbee made further purchases of land of the select- men of the town. In this deed he is termed " Shooe-maker." Henry Silsby, b. in London, England, probably in 1608, died in Lynn in 1700, He m. (1) Dorothy, (2) Grace Eaton, Nov. 18, 1680. Children : Henry, b. Nathaniel, b. abt. 1651, d. abt. 1717, m, 1st Deborah Tompkins, 5 da}', 9 mo., 1671, and 2 Elizabeth Pickering before 1697. (14) Mary, b. in. 3 Zachary Marsh 15 d. 6 mo., 1664. John, b. prob. June 26, 1646, m. Bethia Pitman, Feb. 15, 1673. (28) Jonathan, b. m. 8 Bethiah Marsh 1 d. 11 m. 1673. He the brother of Mary who m. Zachery. Samuel, b. died Oct., 1687, m. Mary Biscoe, July 4, 1676. Ephraim Silsby, b. d. March, 1729, m. Rachel Bassett, Jan. 23, 1693. Hannah, b. d. Jan. 8, 1682, ra. Thomas Laughton, Jr., Dec. 2, 1680. Sarah, b. m. Joseph Collins, Feb. 25, 1682. Henry Silsby's will gives nearly half his property to Jonathan who m. Bethiah Marsh; it is dated Lynn, March. 17, 1698, proved in court Dec. 16, 1700, and reads : ' ' Jonathan my son to have the lower part of the house lot, first that is to say, from the brook, and so upwards through the whole breadth of said lot, until it comes to the land I have given to my son Ephraim. I also give to him my son Jonathan four acres of upland lying next ye land, and Benj. Farr's Hill, he and Jonathan used to improve; also his house, also one full and just half of the lower field so called; also one-half of my piece of fresh meadow, laying near Collings field, and two acres of Salt Marsh laying in the Towns Marsh, — I give to my grandson John Marsh five pounds " " " Henry Collings fifty shelling " " " John Laughton " " " " granddaughter Mary Silsby fifty shelling All my movable estate to my two sons Jonathan and Ephraim Silsby, in equil halves, all to be divided equally, except only 15 pounds which I have given my son Jonathan, my will is that it shall be paid by my son Ephraim. The other portions of the estate not here mentioned, were given in the will to his son Ephraim. Jonathan and Ephraim to be executors. 22 SALEM MARSH FAMILY. , 8 Jan. 1692, voted that Henry Silsbee should sit in the deacon's seat, " History of Lynn, page 292." 42 = 29. SARAH SILSBY, dan. 28 Jonathan and Bethiah (Marsh) Sillsbee, b. Dec. 5, 1674, m. Sept. 9, 1707, number 42. 42. Joseph Lilly. 43 — 31. JONATHAN SILSBY, son 28 Jonathan and Bethiah b. JOHN MARSH^. 23 In 1698 the will of bis father HeniT bequeaths to 28 Jonathan the lot of 4 acres " he had been improving." This was probably the lot which Henry bought in 1660 of John Hathorne, which was the dwelling-place of Jonathan and his family, which he sold Dec. 25, 17U8, to Ephraim Stacey, situated on the north on the county road leading to Marblehead. On the 13 Dec. 1708 Jonathan Silsby husbandman, and wife Bethiah sell to Henry Collins, Jr., land " near my new dwelling house, bounded east by Benj. Farr." These sales of the family houses, and lands, receive an explanation in the statement of (31) Jonathan, Ji-., which may be found in our court records in 1709, that he and his father, and George Lilly, are about removing out of the province. In Larned's "Windham County, Conn., pp. 274-9, I find a Jonathan Silsby, (prob. 31) active in the formation in Oct., 1731 of Scotland Parish and in 1740 assigned to a front seat in the new Meeting House. In Weaver's, Windham," p. 17, the marriage of a Hannah is recorded ; on p. 67, Chloe, a daughter of John Silsby, m. Sept. 27, 1774, Deacon Baker who died Sept. 29, 1778, aged forty. Emigration from this part of Connecticut to Brimfield, Mass., carried thither many of our local surnames, and there is but little doubt that the name of Silsby in those parts may be thus accounted for.
