Burwell B. Quimby was the son of Jonas Quimby. He was born in 1780 in Wayne, North Carolina. He served in the West Tennessee Militia during the Creek War. In the year 1814, in January he served under Steele's 4th Regiment and in November he served under Metcalfe's 1st Regiment. Enlistments were for three months. He is found living in 1820 in Lawrence County, Tennessee, and by 1823 he is in Henry County, then found in 1830 living in Davidson County.
Burwell was married on August 9th, 1806 at Davidson, Tennessee to Susannah Rains, daughter of John Rains and wife Christiana Gowen. Family oral history notes that he spent much time away from his family and even reportedly had 'other families' at the same time, which must be noted since his children are numerous and family submissions often do not agree. He left Davidson county and his family by Susannah in September of 1838. Susannah eventually divorced Burwell in 1838. According to the divorce proceedings, Burwell and Susannah had twelve children, ten still surviving at the time of the filing.
Because of the time he spent away from his family, and the possibility of multiple families, his date of death is difficult to pinpoint. He died sometime between 1838 and 1850, in Tennesse or possibly Green County, Alabama.
Children of Burwell Quimby and wife Susannah Rains (All records found agree that these are children of this marriage):
Children of Burwell Quimby, mother not proven (some of these could be Susannah's, since according to the divorce decree she had 12 children):
Caroline Quimby, born 1838, TN, was an adopted grandchild.
