About Capt. Lewis Ellzey

A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA. DAR Ancestor #: A203732

Lewis Ellzey was the son of Thomas Ellzey and wife Isabelle Thomasin. He was born c. 1701-1702 in Stafford County Virginia. By 1730 he had moved to Overwharton Parish in what became Fairfax County, Virginia. His property was described in the Overwharton Register as being on Colchester Road, Pope's Head Run. A land grant dated 1740 states that his property was just west of Ox Road. He died October 17, 1786.

Lewis Ellzey was active in the local militia, rising to the rank of Captain. He served in the House of Burgesses in 1744. He was active in the historic old Pohick Church, serving as church warden ad vestryman.

During the Colonial period, Pohick Episcopal Church was the congregation of many of our country's most prominent families, including the Washingtons, Masons and Fairfaxes.

Lewis married first, Elizabeth Cave, daughter of Giles Travers and wife Ann Waugh. Elizabeth was the widow of John Cave III. She died c.1728 or 1729. They were married c. 1724 in Virginia.

Lewis married second, Mary Griffin, widow of Walter Griffin. They were married August 1733. She died in 1791, in Truro Parish, Fairfax County, Virginia.

From "Stoddard-Sudduth Papers", pg. 154:

From Virginia records we find Capt. L. Elzey represented Fairfax County, Virginia in the House of Burgesses in 1744. He was a member of the vestry of historic old Pohick Church in 1765, home church of the Washington family of Mount Vernon. Francis and Thomasine Elzey were associated with Pohick. Names of Benjamin Suddath's children appear on the Overwharton Parish Register.
