About Captain William Barton, Sr.
DO NOT CONFUSE WITH William Barton
NOT related to Thomas Barton Wife Elizabeth Foster
William Barton was born BEFORE 1634 in England. William married Unknown MNU and had a child: Captain William Barton, Jr.
William Barton is my 10th great grandfather.
From "Early Families of Southern Maryland, Vol. 5," by Elisa Greenup Jourdan (Westminster, MD: Family Line Publications, 1996), p. 167:
"William Barton left Warwickshire, England, and settled in Virginia before finally settling in Maryland where he is found in St. Clement's Manor in 1654 (AM XLI.9). In 1658 William Barton purchased 300 acres on St. Clement's Bay from Thomas Gerard (AM XLI.118). Also included in this purchase were one dwelling house, one orchard, and two tobacco houses 'Lying or being the Mannoe of St. Clemts in the bounty of St. Maries'; he named this plantation Barton Hall; a typical river type house of the 17th and 18th centuries still stands on this land bordering St. Clement's Bay; it is unknown what portion of it, if any, was the house of the first William Barton (CSSCB). In 1661 William Barton claimed land for his immigration and transporting his wife, son & daughter [from Virginia] (ESM 4.556). Christopher Rousby of Calvert Co. transported a William Barton in 1668 (SOM 24.22 & ESM 13/17).). The latter two are probably the same person and possibly the same person as the s/o William who is mentioned in the 1661 document with his father. There are two more entries for William Varton, one transported in 1671 and 1674 (ESM 16.414 & 18.285). Early records for the Barton family are found in both Charles and Calvert Cos. and after 1696 in Prince George's Co."
