About Carl Bielski
They were sent to settle in Jackson Bay, on the West Coast of the South Island. However, Jackson Bay was under appalling management and after two years of floods which destroyed their crops, the settlement collapsed. The settlers were in dire poverty, with their children forced to wear clothes made from flour bags. Some were relocated to Palmerston and a few to Kimbolton (then called Birmingham). Valentine & Carl went to Taranaki. Carl is buried Te Henui.
