Carrie E. Foster (Zediker)

Clara E. Zediker, known as Carrie, was the daughter of David S. Zediker and wife Eliza Robbins. She was born in 1857 in Central Point, Linn County, Iowa. She married (1) Mr. Smith and (2) Edward F. Foster. Carrie arrived in California after 1885, when she appeared on the 1885 Iowa State Census. Her name is listed on some documents as Carrie and as Clara on others.

Clara E. Zediker appears on the 1860 US Census for Otter Creek, Linn County, Iowa. She is age 2, born in Iowa and living in her parents’ home. She appears on the 1870 US Census for Otter Creek, Linn County, Iowa. She is 12, born in Iowa and living in her parents’ home.

Carrie Foster is one of the sisters of Emma Zediker Stump who contested Emma’s will, taking the matter as far as the California State Supreme Court, where the will was upheld.

Mr Smith is known only from Carrie’s marriage license to Edward Foster. Her name at that time was Carrie Zediker Smith.

Edward F. Foster was the son of William R. Foster and wife Hannah Parslow. He was born c. 1848 in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey. He married Carrie Zediker Smith in Linn County, Iowa, on January 12, 1888.

Edward Foster appears in the 1860 US Census for Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey, living with parents. William R. Foster is age 46, born in New Jersey and a shoemaker by trade. Hannah Foster is age 52 and born in New York. Also in the household are Edward’s brothers and sister. William Foster, born in New York, is age 24 and working as a baker. Deborah Foster is age 19, born in New York, and working as a dressmaker. Samuel Foster is age 14 and born in New York.

Edward appears in the 1870 US Census for Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey. He is age 21, born in New Jersey, with no stated occupation. He is living in the home of his parents, William R. Foster and wife Hannah. William is age 57 and was born in New Jersey. Hannah is age 62 and born in New York.

Edward and Carrie appear in the 1885 Iowa State Census for Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. Edward is 36 and working as a confectioner. Carrie is age 27.

Edward died March, 1913 and is buried at Murdoch-Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa.
