About Catkaptecena 'Philip' Doctor
Catkaptecena 'Philip' Doctor was a Dakota Sioux man of The Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, Oceti Sakowin (Dakota Sioux), Stick on the Ree band.
Upper Mississippi River, 1836-40. By J. N. Nicollet assisted by Lieut. J. C. Fremont, of the Bureau of the Corps of Topographical Engineers authorized by the War Department.
The tribe is known for being the protectors of the sacred Pipestone Quarry for the Oceti Sakowin (Dakota). Dakota people called it―and still call it―Inyan Sa K'api, [the place where] they dig the red stone.
Yankton-Yanktonai division (Western Dakota) (Wičhíyena)
Biography:
Catkaptecena was reportedly born c. 1821 to unknown parents. He was widowed before 1892. In 1887 he is identified as belonging to Stick the Ree Band of the Yankton Sioux and living alone with a daughter Nanay Doctor, age 16, apparantly widowed or separated. In the 1893 census he is known as Little Doctor.
He was reported to be a medicine man and also reported in 1905 to be over 90 years old but per the 1905 census, he was 84. He was NOT identified in the 1906 census which suggests he was committed after June 30 1905 and before June 30, 1906
According to the Canton Asylum annual narrative for 1910, he was, according to Table 7, diagnosed with senile dementia. (Senile dementia, also known as senility, is a mental decline that occurs with age and is characterized by a gradual decline in cognitive abilities.)
According to the book Vanished in Hiawatha, author Carla Joinson states that he died on June 19, 1906. An entry in Find a Grave confirms the year and has him buried in Greenville, Charles Mix County, so we can assume that he died at the Canton Asylum after June 30, 1905, and his body was returned to the Yankton Reservation.
His profile is part of the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Canton_Asylum.
Research Notes:
-He transitioned his Indian name to an English name...in 1902 he was identified as Catkaptecena, in 1903 as Catkaptecena Philip Doctor, and in 1904 as Philip Doctor
-In 1892 he is aka Little Doctor
