About Chief Nikolai "Nicoli" Pavlov Gromov
Born on Attu to Pavel (also referenced as Petr in church records) and Paraskeva. They were living in Iliuluksy Village on Unalaska Island, during the census of March of 1878. His father died a few months after. His mother married Chief Buterin, a year later, which explains how he ended up in St. Paul.
From Pribilof Island Genealogy - "For years the first chief on this island and perhaps the most able man there, …He had marked executive ability and used it to great effectiveness in handling the men as first chief. The latter position is a most trying one, as not only has the incumbent to represent the native men and voice their wishes and protect their interest, but to keep in mind at the same time the interests of their employer and to protect and further those. This Gromof has done with ability and fairness."
