Provided by Kevin Oram:
Christoffel Francois “Stoffel” Du Toit, born 25 December 1798 on “Roodewal” near Worcester, Swellendam District, baptised 13 January 1799, Waveren. Died 2 August 1883 on his farm “Doornbult”, Hopetown District, central Northern Cape, Cape Colony.
Christoffel “Stoffel” Francois Du Toit was the first owner of the farm "Doornbult", in Hopetown District, central Northern Cape. He was probably born at his father Christoffel Du Toit’s farm “Roodewal” near Worcester, or perhaps at adjacent “Roodedraai” like his brother Petrus Jacobus had been in 1797.
Christoffel Francois Du Toit married Elizabeth Jacoba van der Merwe, baptised 9 August 1807 at Graaff-Reinet, on 5 February 1826, also at Graaff-Reinet. Elizabeth was the daughter of Johannes Lodewicus van der Merwe and Martha Sophia van der Merwe (nee van der Merwe). Elizabeth Du Toit seems to have died the following year (1827) at Graaff-Reinet, as a result of complications following the birth of her first child, Christoffel Francois Jacobus Du Toit (born 2 December 1826, baptised 25 February 1827 at Graaff-Reinet, died 26 December 1908 at Hopetown). This Christoffel became a blacksmith at Hopetown.
Following Elizabeth’s death, Christoffel Francois Du Toit remarried at Graaff-Reinet on 6 October 1828 to Martha "Martjie" Johanna Pienaar (born 23 September 1810, Nieu-Bethesda, Graaff-Reinet District. Died on 8 July 1884, on the farm “Doornbult”, Hopetown District). Martjie was the daughter of Johannes Petrus Pienaar and Helena Jacoba Burger.
It is from this second marriage that our Du Toit ancestors may be traced. Stoffel and Martjie Du Toit had at least 3 children, a daughter (Aletta Elizabeth, born 23 June 1833 at Graaff-Reinet, baptised 9 July 1833) and two boys.
The elder son, Johannes Petrus “Jan” Du Toit was born 9 April 1830 Graaff Reinet District and baptised 5 July 1830, at Graaff-Reinet. “Jan” died on 21 February 1897 at Hopetown – he became the second owner of “Doornbult” upon his father’s death. Confusingly, the younger son was named Petrus Johannes “Piet” Du Toit. He was born on 17 May 1836 and baptised on 4 July 1836 at Graaff-Reinet.
It is from Petrus Johannes “Piet” Du Toit that the author’s Ouma (grandmother) Corilli Smith (nee Du Toit) is descended.
