Col. Richard Wells was the son of James (2) Wells and Ann Thornborough (possibly Stevenson?). Anyone with primary documentation confirming Richard's mother's maiden name, please contact me, thanks!)
This Richard's middle name may or may not have been Tidley. It had been my understanding that the "Tidley" was not attached until the next generation (this Richard's son and two grandsons) and I had never found anything in primary or even good secondary sources to show a middle name attached to the subject of this memorial.
My research files indicate that my Richard (1) Wells (March 15, 1721/22 - July 13, 1808) was born in Old Baltimore, Baltimore County (not in the current city of Baltimore), Maryland.
He was married first to Nancy Ann Brown in 1740 (Thanks to contributor HBB for the date) and their children were:
George (b. 1745), Mary (1748), James (1751), Richard Tidley (1752), William (1753), Alexander (1754), Robert ('56), Thomas ('58), Patience ('59), John ('64), Nathaniel ('65).
Then Nancy Ann died in 1765. Some records suggest that Richard remarried immediately (presumably for the sake of his two children under the age of 2) to Mary Stevenson (dates uncertain, but some records say 1717-1769) and they had 3 children together:
Joseph ('66), Bazel ('67), and Elizabeth ('69).
Stevenson might or might not have been Mary's maiden name, as she would have been married to Richard at age 48 and given birth to their first child at age 49; kind of late in life for a woman's first family during that era, which leads to the thought that she might have been a widow and Stevenson her name from a first marriage.
But quite clearly, Richard (1) was not the father of Edmund.
