Col. Robert Bolling was born December 26, 1646 at Tower Street, All Hallows, Barking Parish, London, England. He was the son of John Bolling and Mary Clarke Bolling Robert sailed to Virginia. He became a noted merchant and planter, and was elected Burgess for his county.

Col. Bolling married (1) Jane Rolfe in c.1675. She was the daughter of Thomas Rolfe and Jane Poythress, and the granddaughter of John Rolfe and Pocahantas. She was born October 10, 1650 at Varina Plantation, Henrico, Virginia. They had one son, John Bolling. Jane died in 1676 at Kippax, Charles City Co., Virginia.

Col. Bolling married (2) Anne Stith in 1681. She was the daughter of John Stith and wife Jane Gregory. They had nine children.

The descendants of Robert Bolling and Jane Rolfe are commonly called "red Bollings," in reference to Jane's descent from Pocohantas. The descendants of Robert Bolling and Anne Stith are called "white Bollings," in reference to Anne being a white woman. There are many people who claim ancestry through Robert Bolling and on to Pocohantas. These people are called "blue Bollings".

As a merchant and planter, Robert Bolling acquired a large estate. He rose to the rank of colonel in militia. He served in the House of Burgesses in 1702, representing Charles City County. Robert Bolling died July 17, 1709. After his death, he was buried at his plantation, Kippax, where his tomb still stands. In 1858 his remains were removed to the Bolling Mausoleum at Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, Virginia, by his great-grandson.

In 1681, Col. Bolling married his second wife Anne Stith with whom he had many children, including Robert Bolling, Jr., who was born on January 25, 1682. Both Presidents Bush are descended from Robert Bolling, Jr.

In 1702 Bolling was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses representing Charles City Co., in 1702. He died on July 17, 1709 and was buried at his plantation Kippax, in Prince George Co., Virginia, where his tomb still stands.

Bolling's remains were moved postumously to Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia.

Robert Bolling married Jane Rolfe, the supposed granddaughter of Pocahontas, but she died in childbirth while giving birth to her first child or, at least she died at about the same time. Robert Bolling then married Anne Stith by whom he had many children. However Bolling Family members have tended all to claim descent from Pocahontas, even though almost all of them are really descended from Anne Stith.

Robert Bolling was the son of John Bolling (b. 1615) and Mary Carie (née Clarke) Bolling. He was named after his grandfather Robert Bolling; his grandmother was Anne Clarke. He was born at Tower Street, All Hallows, Barking Parish, in London on December 26, 1646. His father John, was one of the Bollings of Bolling Hall, near Bradford, England. Robert's ancestry could be traced to Robert Bolling, Esquire, who died in 1485 and was buried in the family vault in the church of Bradford. On October 2, 1660, at the age of fourteen, Bolling arrived in the colony of Virginia.

In 1674, he married Jane Rolfe, daughter of Thomas Rolfe, the son of Pocahontas. They had one son, John Bolling (January 26, 1676 – April 20, 1729).[3] Jane is said to have died shortly after the birth. John Bolling married Mary Kennon, daughter of Richard Kennon and Elizabeth Worsham, and they had seven children.

Second marriage and death
In 1681, after his first wife died, Col. Bolling married his second wife Anne Stith, daughter of John Drury and Jane (Gregory) Stith. They had the following nine children together.

Jane Bolling (b. 1682), died young. Robert Bolling Jr. (1682–1749), married Anne Mary Cocke. Robert was the grandfather of Beverley Randolph, the eighth Governor of Virginia.[8] Stith Bolling (1686–1727), married Elizabeth Hartwell. Captain Edward Bolling (1687–1710), married Ms. Slaughter died of smallpox at sea.[9] Anne Bolling (1690–1750), married Robert Wynne. Drury Bolling (1695–1726), married Elizabeth Meriwether. Thomas Bolling (1697–1734). Agnes Bolling (1700–1762), married Richard Kennon. Molly Mary Bolling (b. 1702), married Andrew Baker. The descendants of Robert Bolling's first marriage are sometimes referred to in family history forums as "Red Bollings" due to the Native American lineage of Jane Rolfe's grandmother Pocahontas. These "Red Bollings" include prominent descendants such as Edith Bolling Wilson, wife of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. His grandson Robert Bolling was one of the most prolific poets in colonial Virginia. The descendants of his second marriage are referred to as "White Bollings".

As a merchant and planter, Bolling acquired a large estate. He was colonel of the militia and was a member of the House of Burgesses from Charles City County in 1702.

Robert Bolling died on July 17, 1709, and was buried on his plantation Kippax, in Prince George Co., Virginia, where his tomb still stands. However, in 1858, his remains were removed from Kippax to the Bolling mausoleum at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia erected by his great grandson.

Robert Bolling, "of Kippax," was baptized at All Hallows Barking, London on 26 December 1646, a son of John Bolling[1] and his wife, Mary Carie.[2] Apparently Robert had no siblings.[3][4] The Bolling family is assumed to have been descendants of the Bollings of Bolling Hall, near Bradford, England. Robert's ancestry is assumed to include Robert Bolling, Esquire, who died in 1479-85 and was buried in the family vault in the church at Bradford.[5][4] According to Bolling family oral tradition, the original " deBolling " family was Norman French, and came to Barking Parish with William the Conqueror.[1]

Positions and Property In is early years, Robert traded as "Robert Bolling and Co" which was referred to in the records of several counties, showing that his business was extensive. He was also a Virginia planter and acquired large tracts of land.[2] Robert Bolling was sheriff of Charles City County, and also the Lieutenant-Colonel for the Charles City County militia. This was a traditional office in England which was usually held by a nobleman. In addition to commanding the militia, this person served as the point of communication for the Governor and Secretary of the Colony, and presided in the county courts (p 26).[1] As late as 1702, Robert was still serving as a justice. In 1688, 1691-92, and 1699, Robert represented Charles City County in the House of Burgesses.[13][14] In February 1699, Robert and Richard Bland, both magistrates of Charles City County, filed a petition that additional persons be added to the Commission of the Peace.[15] In 1704 and 1705-06, he represented Prince George County.[16] Kippax Robert owned the plantation called "Kippax" and sometimes also called "Farmingdale," which was located in Charles City (now Prince George) County on the south side of James River.[10] Archaeologist Donald W. Linebaugh, of the University of Kentucky, located the remains of Col. Bolling’s house in Hopewell, Virginia in 2002.[17] Most recently a dairy farm, the property has now been purchased by the National Archeological Conservancy. Death and Legacy Robert died on 17 July 1709 at Charles City County, Colony of Virginia.[10] Robert was originally burried in the family cemetery at Kippax, as was his first wife, Jane. Epitath of Robert Bolling's original tomb stone: Here lyeth interred in hope of a joyful resurrection, the body of Robert Bolling, the son of John and Mary Bolling, of Allhallows, Barkin Parish, Tower Street, London. He was born the 26th of December in the year 1646, and came to Virginia October the 2d, 1660, and departed this life the 17th day of July, 1709, aged sixty-two years, six months and twenty-one days.[2] His second wife, Anne, is also assumed to have been buried at Kippax with other family members as well. Robert Buckner Bolling, a great-grandson of Robert, moved the remains (c. 1900) of Col. Robert Bolling and the succeeding male heirs to a newly built mausoleum at Blandford Cemetery.[18] The graves of daughter, Jane Rolfe, and also Thomas Rolfe were re-marked at Kippax in 1943.[18] The Bollings married with the Stiths, Randolphs, Byrds and other foremost families of the colony.[4] Robert's son, Robert Bolling, Jr. was an ancestor of Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, and Mary Anna Randolph Custis, wife of Robert E. Lee.[citation needed] Woodrow Wilson's second wife was a Bolling of Virginia.[4]
